STEEVES: It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Joy on Friday, June 6, 2003 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. Joy was born on May 17, 1937 in Flin Flon, Manitoba. She was the eldest child of Gerald and Loreen (Marnock) Conway and the apple of her father's eye. The family moved to Winnipeg and then to Montreal, where Joy spent most of her formative years and won the "Miss Montreal" title in her late teens. After high school, Joy moved to New York to work as a stewardess for Eastern Airlines. As she spoke fluent French, Joy was assigned to the coveted transatlantic flights and visited many of the great European cities, whose culture and cuisine she greatly appreciated. In the early nineteen seventies, Joy moved to Miami, Florida where she worked at Neiman Marcus. In Miami she was in a serious car accident, after which she was troubled by migraines for the rest of her life. In the eighties, Joy moved back to Manitoba; first to Carberry, then later to Brandon. She worked at the Suburban and then at the Red Fox. Joy then met Doug, whom she married August 30, 1990. Joy loved to entertain and was a spectacular cook. She loved and spoiled the children in her life - grandchildren, nephews and neighbours. Joy enjoyed gardening, and produced many beautiful flowers, plants and tasty vegetables. She also enjoyed crosswords. Doug introduced Joy to both golf and skiing, and they shared many happy times on the ski hills and the golf course, often playing 100 rounds per summer. In the last year of her life, Doug and Joy adopted a cat from the Humane Society, Maggie, who brought her much happiness. Joy is survived by her husband, Doug; his children, Gregory Steeves of Brandon, Melanie (Gene) Guentert and their children Adam, Megan and Eric of Winnipeg, and Michael (Jil) Steeves and their children Georgia and Sam of Brandon. She is also survived by her brothers, Jack (Lorna) Conway and their sons Drew and Keith of Oakville, Ontario and Michael (April) Conway and their son Shawn of Yellowknife, NWT. A Celebration of Joy's Life will be held at Central United Church, 327-8th Street on Wednesday, June 11, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Laird Russell-Yearwood will officiate. Active Pallbearers are: Don Clisby, Bill Moody, Bob Nevill, George McLeod, Garth Hoy and Wayne Gross. Honorary Pallbearers are: Linda Clisby, Linda Moody, Wilma Nevill, Peggy McLeod, Shelly Hoy and Debbie Gross. Interment will follow in the Brandon Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined. Friends who wish may make a donation in memory of Joy to the Brandon Humane Society, 2200-17th Street East, Brandon, MB R7A 7M6. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to memorieschapel@mts.net. Arrangements are with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.
