CHOWN: Josephine Maud (nee Read). It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Josephine on Sunday July 14, 2002 at the Assiniboine Centre. Josephine was born in Lipton, Saskatchewan on August 27, 1925, where she spent her early years. She attended Lipton School, moving to Brandon, Manitoba with her parents in 1941. Upon completion of her courses at Wheat City Business College she moved to Reston, Manitoba in 1942, where she was employed as a secretary in the Bank of Montreal. Josephine returned to Brandon in 1945 to enter the Brandon General Hospital School of Nursing, and graduated in the year 1948, having won the gold medal and various other individual honours. She met Edwin (Ed) Chown in 1948, and they were married on June 11, 1949. They enjoyed traveling across Canada by train, and have fond memories of their trips. In 1952, they planned and built their own home in which they spent their entire married life together. A son, Gregory, was born in December, 1954, and a daughter, Catherine, in June, 1958. The family enjoyed many camping holidays to various places across Canada. Many happy memories were shared at Riding Mountain National Park. Josephine did all her nursing at Brandon General Hospital on a part-time and special duty (private) basis until retiring in February, 1983. Josephine belonged to the Manitoba Association of Registered Nurses and the United Church Couples Club. In later years she enjoyed five and ten-pin bowling, and won several trophies in ten-pin. Josephine golfed at the Deer Ridge Golf course, and also joined the Senior Ladies Group at Northern Pines Golf Club where she made many friends. Josephine also enjoyed curling, and social times at "booster" dances, bridge club and other activities. Josephine leaves to cherish her memory, her loving husband Edwin (Ed), her son Greg (Kathy), daughter Cathy (Ted) Hlynsky, and five much-loved grandchildren, Adam and Laura Chown, Matthew, Michael and Jennifer Hlynsky all of Winnipeg. She also leaves behind brother Ernest of Fleming, Saskatchewan and sister Marion Laurie of Langley, British Columbia, and numerous nieces and nephews. Josephine was predeceased by, her parents, Charles Ernest and Maud Rosina Read, and sisters Evelyn Duns and Muriel Read. Josephine was a kind, caring, patient and thoughtful person, and will be sadly missed by family and friends who knew her. The family would like to thank Dr. Macfarlane and the nursing staff at the Assiniboine Centre for their kind and compassionate care. A Memorial Service will be held at Memories Chapel & Pre-planning Centre, on Wednesday July 17, 2002 at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Joan Jarvis of Central United Church officiating. Cremation has taken place and a private family interment will be held at Rosewood Memorial Gardens. Flowers are gratefully declined.
