Obituary

The death of Joseph Cosmas "Chico" MacKenzie of Brandon occurred at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Monday, November 18, 2002. Joseph was born in Dominion, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia on December 24, 1929. He grew up in Dominion, Cape Breton, completing his schooling at Park Street School. Chico worked as a delivery boy for the Co-op stores in his early teens. He joined the Canadian Forces at the age of 19 years in 1949, serving three years. He then decided to visit Mexico. However, he never made it that far and worked in the mines of Kemano, B.C. from 1952 to 1954. He then returned to the military and served until 1980, a total of twenty-nine years. Chico was always a member of the Artillery and had postings in Winnipeg, Hemer, West Germany, Gagetown and finally Shilo. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, the Army, Navy & Air Force Veterans and the Lions Club (Sprucewoods). Always an avid sports fan, he enjoyed boxing, fishing and hunting. He enjoyed watching his children get married and settle down. Chico leaves his wife Marjorie Louise MacKenzie (nee Mears); Sons, James (Diane) of Brandon, Dale (Tracey) of Brandon, Murdock (Kim) of Sprucewoods; Daughter Linda (Cliff) Rosenberg of Lethbridge, AB. Grandchildren, Shauna, Jamie, Cole, CJ (Cosmas Jacob), Robin, John and Ashley. He also leaves sisters; Ann Murphy of Ottawa, ON, Margaret (Reg) Taylor of Whitefish, ON, and brother Linus of Ottawa, ON. Mr. MacKenzie was predeceased by his mother, Mary Sarah, father, Joseph Murdock and by brothers, John R., Chrissy and Archie. Prayers will be said at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street North on Wednesday (tonight), November 20, 2002 at 5:30 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church, on Thursday, November 21, 2002 at 2:00 pm. Celebrant will be Fr. Leo Fernandes. Pallbearers will be: James, Dale, Murdock, Linus MacKenzie, Reg Taylor and Kevin Power. There will be a military guard of honor. Friends who wish may make a donation in memory of Chico, to the Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 2B7.
