Obituary

CHICKEN: Joseph Edward, beloved husband of Alice Chicken of Brandon, passed away at Rideau Park Personal Care Home, after a lengthy fight with Alzheimer's on Wednesday, March 28, 2007 while in his 89th year. Joe was born on the farm at Culross, Manitoba on December 7, 1917. He spent some of his younger years there as well as Elm Creek and Fannystelle before moving to Winnipeg. He worked many different odd jobs prior to enlisting in the Canadian Army but remustered to the R.C.A.F. He served as a Flight Engineer on the Cansos aircraft, while stationed primarily on the Queen Charlotte Islands on the West Coast from 1941 - 1945. It was during this time that he met and married his wife Alice (Goodchild) on September 24, 1943. After the war, he worked for CN Rail at the Transcona Shops for 35 years until his retirement in 1982. Joe enjoyed a number of activities including curling, bowling, golf, hunting, and fishing. He received a number of awards and trophies for his bowling for which he was very proud. He had a cabin that he thoroughly enjoyed on Eagle Lake in Ontario. He spent much time there doing what he liked to do best - fish. He especially enjoyed teaching his children and then later the grandchildren the fine art of catching the "big" one. He was also quite a storyteller and enjoyed telling the grandchildren about the one that got away. Always a farmer at heart, Joe was very pleased when his daughter, Linda, married a farmer. He spent many happy hours at the Graham farm helping out any way that he could. In later years, he was happy doing the "go-fer" jobs as it made him feel needed. Joe will be greatly missed by his wife Alice; son Ron (Linda) Harrison of Calgary; daughters Linda Graham and Carol (George) Downey both of Carberry; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters Margaret Selley and Gladys Fawcett and numerous nieces and nephews. Joe was predeceased by his parents, Mary and Thomas; brothers Bill, Tom and John and son-in-law Phillip Graham. At Joe's request, no service will be held. Cremation has taken place and a private family interment will be held at a later date. Expressions of sympathy may be made at www.memorieschapel.com. Arrangements are with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.

Husband
I remember the day I met you
The day God made you mine,
I remember the day I lost you
And will till the end of time.
With all the years and heartaches
The one thing that makes me glad
Is that you chose me to share with you
The many years we had.
I often sit and think of you
And cry a silent tear,
You live with me in memory
Each day of the year.
~ Lovingly remembered, Alice ~

Dad
The hardest thing in life to bear
Is to want your Dad and he's not there
With a broken heart we whisper low
We love you Dad and miss you so
As long as we live we'll always be glad
That we were your children
And you were our dad
~ Love Ron, Linda, and Carol ~

Granps
We did not see you close your eyes
Or hear your final sigh
We only heard that you were gone,
Too late to say goodbye
We wish so much that life could be
Just as it was before
That you'd be in your favorite chair
When we come thu' the door.
~ Love grandchildren and great-grandchildren ~
