WAYNE: John "Johnnie" Wayne of Brandon, beloved husband and best friend of Velma passed away on Thursday, July 1, 2004 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre after a short fight with cancer. He leaves his wife, Velma; daughter, Cheryl (Craig) Miller; son Jeffrey (Linda) Wayne; grandchildren, Cara and Steven Miller and Jodi Wayne; special sister, Helyne Bannerman. Also surviving are his brothers, Walter (Nellie), Tony (Verda), Joe and Marshall (Sharon); and sister Mary and their families. His parents, siblings, Kay, Mike and Sophie, predeceased Johnnie. Johnnie was the third youngest in a family of nine children born to Nick and Martha Woychyshyn of the Ozerna District, where he attended Fraser School. In his lifetime he had several occupations and he enjoyed them all - milkman, taxi owner and driver, CPR fireman and parts manager at the farm machinery plant in Minnedosa (now Morris Industries) where he retired from after twenty-nine years of service, in 1990. Johnnie and Velma (nee Gowing) were married in Minnedosa, MB on August 2, 1952 and celebrated their fiftieth anniversary in August of 2002. They lived in Minnedosa until 1986 when they moved to a new home at 5 Wildwood Bay, off Deer Road, just south of Riding Mountain National Park. His project was renovating and making beautiful the yard, and it was a showplace. In 1997, they moved to Brandon to be closer to family and medical services. Johnnie and Velma have traveled to many countries of the world - Eastern Europe, Western Europe, the British Isles, most of the USA and to every province and territory in Canada. They spent nine wonderful winters at "Country Sunshine Park" in Weslaco, Texas, and just last November spent three weeks in Portugal. They not only took tours and visited friends, but they camped and trailered many thousands of miles in North America. Johnnies' hobbies were reading, playing cards, dancing, music, his yard and garden, and spending many happy hours with his grandchildren, Cara, Steven and Jodi. This was always his greatest delight. He belonged to the Minnedosa Lions Club when in Minnedosa, and the past few years really enjoyed volunteering at Fairview Home in Brandon, where he played cards with the residents and helped the recreation staff where needed. His family and friends knew him as a cribbage buff. Johnnie was an avid hockey and football fan and cheered on his favorites in the NHL and CFL. He was Cara's number one fan in her fastball career over the past years, seldom missing a game. He had a keen interest in politics. His special buddy the past few months was Kiwi, a little black pug, belonging to the Miller family - he loved her and that love was returned by this little pup. He called her his "little nurse". Cremation has taken place and his life was celebrated at a Memorial Service in Minnedosa at St. Mark's Anglican Church. Rev. James Bardsley officiated. Organist Ruth Hopkins and fiddler, Erma Wyness provided the music. Craig Miller and Jodi Wayne presented eulogies. Don Roy provided music on bag pipes at the Cemetery. Interment followed in the Minnedosa Cemetery.
