Obituary

SHOPKA: The death of John Henry Shopka occurred peacefully at his residence in Sokol Manor on Friday evening May 13, 2005. The Ceremony to Celebrate John's Life will be held at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street North on Saturday, May 21, 2005 at 2:30 pm. Complete obituary information will follow. Shopka: John Henry Shopka died joyfully on May 13, 2005. Johnny was born in
Brandon on January 1, 1926. He was the youngest child of four boys and three
girls born to Dimitro (Mike) Shopka and Ann Budinski. After attending
Fleming, Earl Oxford and Earl Haig Schools, John began working for McGavin's
Breads, where he worked for 50 years, retiring in 1991 at age 65. In 1948
John married Marie Hoffer. The couple had three children, two sons John
Monte and Michael Jarl and one daughter Janine Marie. John was a member of
the Brandon Golf and Country Club, the Sokol Hall, and was President of the
local union at McGavin's. John was predeceased by his parents, sisters
Sophia Mellom and Jean Richards, and brother Michael (Kayo). He is survived
by: sons John Monte of Winnipeg, Michael Jarl (Janice) Shopka of Vancouver;
and daughter Janine (Darrel) Gustafson of St. John, North Dakota; brothers,
Gus (Val) Shopka of Vancouver, Walter (Laverrna) Shopka of Vancouver; sister
Rose Trudeau of Perry Sound, Ontario; grandchildren, Eric Shopka and Bridget
(Wayne) Gradwell. John was many things to many people: loving husband,
father and grandfather, breadman, birdman, candyman, philosopher and friend.
From the bowling alley to the golf course to everywhere he went, John Henry
Shopka brought a sense of humor and a joy for life that touched us all. A
celebration of John's life will be held at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street
North, on Saturday, May 21, 2005, at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of
flowers, donations may be made to Sokol Supportive Housing, 30-13th Street
North, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 6T1.
