JENNINGS: John Alvin. Early morning June 2, 2005, surrounded by his loving family, John Alvin Jennings decided to continue his journey after a long and courageous battle with cancer. John was born August 29, 1928 in Baldur Manitoba, youngest of 10 children to Thomas Robert Jennings and Florence Ann Marshall. He received his early schooling in Lintlaw, SK and as an "East Ender" at King George School in Brandon. John was a mechanic and "Mr. Fix It" at heart and could fix or build anything. He operated the Texaco Service Station in Forrest, Manitoba. He also worked for a number of years at J.A. Keddy's, Modern Machine, Graham and Martin and then at Kane Equipment for 21 years as the mobile mechanic and eventually becoming the Service Manager. When Kane closed, John worked for Litz as well as trying his hand at well-drilling. He then took on the challenge of
working for Child & Family Services, repairing the many group homes for about 25 years. During that time, he also worked at Cargill Nutrena Feeds, painting, building and generally keeping the place running. John loved working and could never be convinced to really "retire". Even during the last months of his illness, he was still checking on some of the group homes & the Resource Centre to make certain everything was OK. John was a family man. His family was the most important part of his life. He loved to fish with Tom and his grandchildren and spent his last months helping fix-up his 2 granddaughter's homes - painting and renovating and we all wish he could have had the chance to be involved with the next 2. He was a handyman for the whole family and loved to build cupboards and do renovations. His favourite store was the CMHA Re-Store which he visited daily to see if anything new had been brought in that he could use for his countless projects. There was always a special "deal" for John and he may have been their most regular customer. Occasionally, John liked
to travel to various casinos to play the slots and seemed to have exceptional luck at this. One memorable casino weekend included his whole family when he and his grandson outlasted the group, staying up well into the night. Some friends actually thought some of the luck would "rub off"
on them if they rubbed John's head. Grandpa John was popular with all the grandchildren's friends and everyone called him "Grandpa John" - even the lab staff at the hospital. John is survived by and will be greatly missed by his wife of 15 years, Edie Field, son Tom (Debbie), daughter Leslie (Ken
Loader), stepsons Kevin and Shawn (Amanda) MacKenzie, grandchildren Alana (Mike), Cherie (Rob), Braden and Alissa, mother-in-law Amy Field, sister Ella Mulroy, many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and countless friends. A gathering of family and friends was held at Memories Chapel in Brandon on June 4. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations can be made to Child & Family Services of Western Manitoba, the Canadian Cancer Society, or a charity of choice.
"God saw you getting tired, And the cure was not to be, So He wrapped you in His loving arms, And whispered, 'Come with me'. You suffered much in silence, Your spirit did not bend, You faced your pain with courage, Until the very end. You tried so hard to stay with us, Your fight was all in vain, God took you in His loving arms, And saved you from all the pain."
