HUGHES: On Wednesday, April 20, 2005, "Jack" John A. Hughes passed away peacefully at the Assiniboine Centre. The second of four children born to Arthur and Florence Hughes, Jack was born in Brandon, Manitoba on May 20, 1917. Jack attended Park and Earl Oxford schools before having to enter into the workforce to support his family during the depression. He spent some time working at the relief camps at Lake Audy in the Riding Mountains and at Murray's Bakery in Brandon as a helper/delivery man. In 1943, he started to work for Codville Co. where he worked for the next 40 years, retiring in 1982. Jack also met his bride to be, Edith Foord, in 1943. They were married in 1944 and together they raised two sons, David and Robert. Jack was an avid "putterer" and gardener. He annually planted two dozen tomato plants and 50 hills of potatoes, which flourished each summer under his watchful eye, producing bounties of food to feed friends and family in the fall. Grandpa and Grandma Jack and Edith traveled a bit following retirement to places they had always dreamed of visiting: Great Britain, Alaska and a Caribbean Cruise. In later years their ability to travel became limited so they purchased a small cottage at Clear Lake where they enjoyed spending time at the beach with their family. Jack was predeceased by his parents; brother, Fred; sister, Rosanna; wife, Edith; infant granddaughter, Sandra and numerous sisters and brothers-in-law. He is survived by his sister, Noreen Hamilton; sons, Dave (Marguerite) and Robert (Betty); grandchildren, Darren (Julie), Chad (special friend, Erin), Nicole, Adam and Ashley; great grandchildren, Brodie, Tori, Aiden and Noah; brothers-in-law, Jim and Ted Foord; sister-in-law, Dot Foord; as well as many nieces and nephews. The Ceremony to Celebrate Jack's Life was held at Trinity United Church on Saturday, April 23, 2005. The Rev. John Nesbitt officiated. Interment followed in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens. Flowers are gratefully declined.
