Obituary

Professor John Weldon Grant of Fairview Home, passed away at his residence on April 12, 1999. Born March 12, 1919 in Sunnybrae, Nova Scotia, son of Alec and Linda Grant, he was raised in Sunnybrae and graduated from Pictou Academy in 1937. Weldon then entered Pine Hill Divinity School to study Theology. During his internship, he taught and preached in Rabbit Lake and Biggar, Saskatchewan. He graduated from Pine Hill in 1943 and entered the mission field with the United Church and moved to Trinidad. Teaching in both San Fernando and Siparia, Weldon was the first head master of the Iere School in Siparia. He met Bernice Emma Moats while on furlough and they were married in Gray, Saskatchewan, June 30, 1954. The service was conducted by Bernice's brother, Harvey. Bernice and Weldon adopted three children in Nova Scotia and returned to Trinidad. In 1961, they returned to Canada. Weldon taught for one year at Vincent Massey High School and then started at Brandon University, where he taught in the English department until his retirement. Weldon Grant was a lover of literature and science fiction. While on sabbatical from teaching, he spent six months exploring Ireland and the poets that had been inspired by it's countryside. He also loved stories of the sea and read many varied authors, both factual and fiction. He is survived by his sons, Charles and Dan, daughter Susan. A sister, Jessie MacPhee of Sunnybrae, Nova Scotia also survives. Weldon was predeceased by his wife Bernice. The funeral ceremony will be held at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street North on Thursday, April 15, 1999 at 2:00 pm. Rev. Bob Hunter of Knox United Church will officiate.
