Joanne Marie Malkowich

January 17, 1936 – September 13, 2026

It is with great sadness and very heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, JOANNE MARIE MALKOWICH (nee Sawchuk) on September 13th, 2026, at the age of 90, at the Brandon Regional Health Centre.

Mom was born on January 17th, 1936 in St. Boniface, Manitoba to Olga & Bill (William) Sawchuk, she grew up on Bertrand Street in St. Boniface. After the passing of Olga Sawchuk, Bill married Sophie, and they had 2 daughters Carlyle (Andryo), and Beverly Sawchuk (deceased).

Joanne moved to Churchill, where she took a job with the Pastoral team working as a secretary in the Catholic church. It was there that she met Anthony, STEVEN Malkowich (deceased 2019) on a blind date at the Churchill Dance Hall, which began a life-long love of dancing. They were married in Winnipeg September 7, 1957. Joanne and Steve had three children, Alison, Louise, and Steven, and at the time of her passing, Joanne had 7 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Left to mourn her passing; daughter Alison Scott (Bill Adamek), grandson Kristoffer McCarthy (Stephanie), great-granddaughters Kaelyn & Kiya, granddaughter Chelsea Argenta (Dan), great-grandsons Dominic & Maverick; daughter Louise Lamont (Scott), grandson Adam Lamont (Brenna), great-grandchildren Michael & Danielle, grandson Ryan Lamont (Whitney), great-grandsons Finley & Harper, granddaughter Stephanie Will (Josh), great-grandchildren Maple & Alder; and son Steven Malkowich (Trisha Snow), grandchildren Meghan & Mason Malkowich. She is also survived by sister Carlyle (Andryo) and many nieces and nephews.

Mom moved with Dad across the Province of Manitoba, living in Wabowden, Island Lake, The Pas, Lynn Lake, Thompson, McCreary, Neepawa, Brandon, Portage la Prairie, Winnipeg, Morden, and Regina. After Dad left the Federal Government, they moved to Morden to own the Arlington Hotel and eventually the Morden Cinema. Also, while in Morden, Joanne became a Healthcare Aide, a role of which she was very proud. Finally, they returned to Brandon to enjoy their retirement years.

Mom was a member of the Catholic Women’s League for over 63 years. Her church was very important to her. She enjoyed golfing at the Glen Lea Golf Course. She also enjoyed when her girls were around to go shopping with her. She was a very stylish lady and loved her shoes, clothes and jewellery. Dad and Mom were awarded the Brandon Sun "Above & Beyond” Award in 2018 for volunteerism in the community.

She was a Mom, Sister, Baba, and Great Baba. She will be deeply missed by family & friends.
