FLEWITT: Jean Flewitt passed away peacefully at her home at Westvview Lodge on Saturday, August 27, 2005. Jeannie Allanson Scott was born on October 11, 1905 on the original 1883 homestead, 1 mile north of Minto. She was the eldest of five girls - Marge, Kay, Muriel and Helen and two boys - Alex and Billy. What a houseful and what a lot of fun!! Schooldays were spent at Minto where she completed her Grade XI at the age of 16 years. Mom then went home to help her mother look after the rest of the family but also to help her dad in the field. Those were some of her favorite years with the threshing gangs and driving the grain wagon of which she was very proud to be able to back up to the granary. She and her sisters played a lot of baseball in their years and that was when she met Bill Flewitt and they were married in 1926. Their early years included the drama club, going to dances and playing in an orchestra - Mom on piano and Dad on the violin for $5.00 a night!! The 30's, 40's and 50's were not easy years for raising a family but that didn't seem to matter to Mom. She accepted the hardships because "that's just the way it was." Through the years she became a family treasure not only to her immediate family but also to her siblings and their families. Family reunions cemented the family bond and will continue to do so. The community of Minto also had a treasure as Mom took an active roll in many organizations. Some of her accomplishments were: Co-op secretary for 21 years, church organist for decades!, Legion Auxiliary President and regional representative, community club, drama club, farm organizations, T.O.P.S. and a wealth of knowledge on two history book committees. She always attended annual meetings of every organization within the community and took an active interest in them. A lot work was done after retiring off the farm and continued well into her 90's far beyond what most people would consider the call of duty. She had a practical aspect to her character or maybe it was just because she was Scotch. Everything that one might need was saved. She was always non-judgmental and never critical of anyone and always accepted people at face value. Her acceptance of situations through her life were always summed up by "That's just the way it was". She wanted to go to University and so was very encouraging to her family including grandchildren to further their education and to do well. "A job worth doing is worth doing well." Curling was a joy to her and she curled well into her late 80's. She also attended World Curling Championships, Briers and at age 98 the Olympic Trials in Brandon. She did aerobics and aqua-sizes in her mid 80's and was a member of TOPS until her early 90's. She thought a hot air balloon ride might be fun for her 95th birthday so that's what happened! She enjoyed fellowship with all ages of people and was always eager to try new and different activities. The family was fortunate that Mom made the decision to downsize and then to move into Westview Lodge. She made many new friends, both in residents and staff and was treated with so much kindness during her time there. Jean was predeceased by her husband Bill in 1993. She leaves to mourn and cherish the memories: Betty (Art) Oakden, Scott, Ed (Jen), Lynn (Marlene), 11 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and Heidi, her first great great grandchild. The Celebration of Mom's Life was held at the Minto United Church, Minto, Manitoba on Wednesday, August 31, 2005. Rev. Harvey Hurren and Rev. Irene Greenwood officiated. Interment took placed in the Minto Cemetery. It was such a fitting day as so many people paid tribute to her. We thought she'd live forever and she almost did!! We'll all miss her terribly. Friends who wish may make a donation in memory of Jean to the Minto Cemetery Perpetual Care Fund, c/o R.M. of Whitewater, Box 53, Minto, MB R0K 1M0. Mom finished her history in 1998 with words that show her kind and caring attitude throughout her life.
"I expect to pass through this world but once; any kindness therefore, that I can show or any praise that I can bestow upon my fellow man; let me do it now; let me not defer it nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again. "
