Obituary

The death of Janina "Jean" Szczepanski of Brandon occurred in the city on September 16, 2002. Jean was born in Lasisk, Poland on May 15, 1925. Her early years were spent in Poland in forced labor camps. She left Poland in 1948 on the S.S. Marine Shark, arriving in Quebec, where she worked as a nanny for one year. Jean then came to Brandon, where she met and married Henry Szczepanski. They raised two sons, Michael and Richard. Jean worked as a cook in various hotels in the city. She was well known for her wonderful dinners and her generosity to family and friends. Her main interests were her church and family. She was blessed with three grandsons, who were her pride and joy. She spent many hours fishing on the banks of the Assiniboine River. Another passion was gardening and growing flowers of all kinds. She is survived by; her son, Richard and grandsons, Craig, Cory and David and daughter-in-law, Diane Buschau. Jean was predeceased by; her husband Henry, one son, Michael and daughter-in-law, Darlene Chapman. The funeral service was held on Thursday, September 19, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at Memories Chapel, 330 - 18th Street North. Fr. Anthony Korewa of St. Hedwig's Church officiated. All attending were considered honorary pallbearers. Interment followed in the Brandon Cemetery. Friends who wish may make a donation in memory of Jean to the Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3C 2B7.
