SPEELMAN: Jan Speelman, the popular 54-year-old President of the Manitoba Teacher's Society, passed away at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Tuesday, January 28, 2003 with her family and many close friends at her side. She was born in Brandon on March 31, 1948, the daughter of Osbourne and Lottie "Toots" Doak. Jan excelled in school and enjoyed her sports. She went to Brandon University after she completed high school and received her teacher's certificate. Jan then taught in Neepawa for two years. After trying a brief career as an Air Canada Stewardess, Jan returned to Brandon University to continue in Education. While studying there, she met and married her husband Chris on March 7, 1970. Jan was dedicated to her family and friends and continued to serve her community with the Brandon Kinette Club. In 1979 the family moved to Wawanesa where she returned to teaching full time. In addition to being a hockey and ringette mom, Janice was instrumental in starting the Wawanesa Lioness Club and served two years as Charter President. Always caring and helpful as a school councilor, she encouraged her family to add another member, 13-year-old Jason to the clan. In 1993 all the family moved to Brandon where Janice continued as councilor at King George School. During that time she was elected and served 4 years on the Manitoba Teachers Society Provincial Executive. Her hard work and genuine interest in people was always evident. After successfully fighting her first brush with cancer, Jan moved on to be elected Vice-President, then President of the MTS. The family cottage at Pelican Lake was the place Janice would relax with her family; husband Chris, Daughter Gillian; son Curtis and his wife Shaughn; and son Jason and his wife Ashley. In addition to sailing and golfing, "Nama" Jan took great pleasure in spoiling her grandchildren, Bayley, Amy, little Josh and baby Kiefer. Visiting often were Uncle Myron and Aunt Mina Magee, Uncle Byron and Aunt Sue Doak, cousin Jim and Karen Doak and Aunt Margaret Doak. Both her parents, Osbourne and Lottie, predeceased Jan. The Ceremony to Celebrate Jan's Life was held at Central United Church, 327-8th Street, Brandon on Saturday, February 1, 2003. The Rev. Joan Jarvis officiated. Close friend and colleague Danita Borton provided a wonderful eulogy. Friends who wish may make a donation in memory of Jan to the Cancer Care Manitoba Foundation, designated to Breast Cancer Research or Breast Cancer H.O.P.E., 675 McDermott Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R3E 0V9. A wonderful tribute to Jan from her colleagues and friends can be found on the MTS website: www.mbteach.org. Arrangements were with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.
