MACKAY: James Arthur "Jim" MacKay, beloved husband of Gayle, dear father of James and grandfather of Jesse, passed away at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Wednesday, August 11,2004. Prayers will be said at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street North, on Sunday, August 15, 2004 at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church on Monday, August 16, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. Celebrant will be Fr. Leo Fernandes. Interment will follow in the Brandon Cemetery. Complete obituary information will follow. MACKAY: James Arthur "Jim" MacKay, of Brandon, beloved husband of Gayle, dear father of James and grandfather of Jesse, passed away at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Wednesday, August 11, 2004. Jim was born on January 9, 1937, son of John and Florence MacKay. He was the eldest of six children, raised in the mining communities of New Glasgow and Stellarton, Nova Scotia. Jim joined the Royal Canadian Regiment in 1955 at the age of 18 years. He transferred to the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers in 1958. Throughout his career, Jim served in London, ON, Churchill, Germany, Calgary, Ottawa and Shilo. He served with the following units; The Royal Canadian Regiment, The Royal 22nd Regiment (the van doos), The Royal Canadian Dragoons, 3rd Regiment Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, 1st and 4th Service Battalions. In 1963 - 1964, he served as a United Nations Peacekeeper in Gaza, Egypt and in Cyprus in 1982. Jim retired in 1992 having achieved the rank of Chief Warrant Officer, after 37 years of service to Canada. He was a member of the United Nations Canadian Veterans for Peace, ANAF Veterans Branch #10, Royal Canadian Legion Branch #3, Honorary Member of CFB Shilo Warrant Officers' and Sergeants' Mess, Shilo Golf and Country Club and Vice President of the Stanley Park Lawn Bowlers. Jim loved to curl and golf competitively in the Men's Senior League with the Brandon Curling Club and the Shilo Golf and Country Club. He enjoyed Lawn Bowling in the Stanley Park Mixed League with his wife Gayle, and sister-in-law, Gloria and many dear friends. They enjoyed winter vacations in Texas, Florida, The Canary Islands, Nova Scotia and British Columbia and shared many fond memories of their time spent there. Jim is survived by his wife, Gayle; son James (Lise Chiasson), grandson, Jesse; brothers, John (Evelyn) and Frank, both of Nova Scotia; sister Rosaria (Dominic) Roverro from Connecticut; sister-in-law, Gloria (Paul) Parkolub; Uncle Jim's special niece, Leslee Gayle (Robert Lavin) Parkolub; four nieces; nine nephews and many cousins. He was predeceased by; his father, John James MacKay (1957); brother, Allen (1977); mother, Florence (1992); and sister, Marie Hatfield (2003). Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church on Monday, August 16, 2004. Celebrant was Fr. Leo Fernandes. Special music , Ave Maria was sung by Jim's brother, Frank of Nova Scotia. Pallbearers were: Don McLean, Tom Gibson, Harvey Campbell, William Hebner, Bob Lund and Richard Alfred. Interment followed in the Brandon Cemetery. Friends who wish may make a donation in memory of Jim to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 3-824-18th Street, Brandon, Manitoba R7A 5B7.
