GREAVES: On the eve of his 88th birthday, James Alfred "Jim" Greaves, our beloved husband, dad and grandpa passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at his residence, Fairview Home. Jim was born in Melita, Manitoba on June 21, 1919. He was predeceased by his parents Emma and Percy Greaves; brother Gerald and sister Vivienne (Bin) Fedoruk; brothers-in-law Russell Fedoruk and Dave Palmer. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife Ruby of 61 years; daughter Janice (Michael) Skafel; grandchildren Matthew and Erika of Burlington, Ontario; son Neil (Judy) of Stonewall, Manitoba; grandchildren Andrew and Kaitlyn of Winnipeg; son Ian (Shelley); grandchildren Evan, Moira and Owen, also of Winnipeg. Jim is also survived by sisters-in-law Margaret Greaves of Brandon, Bernice Palmer, as well as cousins, nieces and nephews. At an early age, after the death of Jim's father, the family moved to Brandon where he took his schooling. He worked at Western Grocers prior to joining the Canadian Air Force in 1940 and was posted in several places across Canada. Following his discharge, Ruby and Jim were married at First Baptist Church. He resumed work at Pues Interior Furnishing. Jim was president of the Children's Aid Society, when he was appointed to the position of public relations where he enjoyed working for over thirty years. Jim had a passion to make a difference in this world and so volunteered for many aspects of his life, in the community. He was a long time member of First Baptist Church, where he served on various committees, often taking the lead on special projects. Jim was on the board of the Baptist Union of Western Canada, and Moderator of the Manitoba Area of Baptist Churches. He assisted the Brandon Community Chest or United Way and served on the Brandon School Board as a trustee. He enjoyed the challenge of working with young people and had many years of service as an instructor with the #82 Air Cadet Squadron of Canada. Jim had the privilege of seeing cadets move on to successful careers often to the military life. He continued his interest in the air force, joining Brandon's Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum. As chairman of the Christmas Cheer Registry and for several years, saw hundreds of Christmas hampers go to homes in need. In 1999, Jim was presented with the Mayor's Volunteer Service Award for outstanding Community work. Jim's retirement in 1984 allowed him to resume his interest in gardening, specializing in Gladioli, winning many prizes in horticultural shows in Brandon and surrounding districts. He spent many happy hours working with pieces of stained glass to form interesting plaques and objects. Ruby and Jim enjoyed the freedom to travel to Europe, the British Isles, Hawaii, across Canada and points in the USA. They also found out what a joy it was to share a holiday with good friends at a far off land or camping in beautiful Manitoba. Sports were of great interest to Jim. He attended the Wheat King games, enjoyed bowling, curling, and the great game of golf. The Ceremony to Celebrate Jim's Life was held at First Baptist Church on Monday, June 25, 2007 with Rev. Randy Stanton and Rev. Orton Anderson officiating. Reflections were given by daughter Janice Skafel and good friend Charles Brawn. Music was provided by Maxine Dilay on the organ and violinist Marla Winters. Pallbearers were grandchildren Kaitlyn Greaves, Erika Skafel, Andrew Greaves, Matthew Skafel, and nephews from Vancouver, Ken and Ron Fedoruk. Interment followed at Rosewood Memorial Gardens. The family would like to acknowledge all who attended the service in Jim's memory.
