Obituary

The death of James Duncan Cowan, beloved husband of Lorna, occurred at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Saturday, November 24, 2001. Jim was born in Waskada, Manitoba on September 18, 1928 to Daniel and Elizabeth (nee Divens) Cowan. He was the youngest of five children. Jim attended Waskada School and grew up in that area. His parents, Daniel and Elizabeth died before Jim was 17. He then lived and farmed with his brother Alex and family in Goodlands until 1955 when they moved to Reston. They continued to farm together until Jim had his own farm. In 1972 Jim and Lorna Howe were married, and Jim became an instant father to Bill and Brian. Jim continued to farm at Reston until he partnered with his nephew at Inganess Dairy Farms for several years. Jim was a dedicated farmer all his life. He did change occupations and became a crane operator and then his last years he spent working as a concrete truck driver. Jim enjoyed all of his occupations and especially the people he met and worked with. Jim was pre-deceased by his parents, brother, Alex and sister, Christina Hainsworth. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Lorna, son, Bill (Chris) Howe and grandsons, Sean, Scott and Colin of Stonewall; and son, Brian (Barb) Howe and granddaughters, Julia and Alexis of Brandon. Also surviving are sisters, Margaret Mowatt of Brandon and Jean Thompson of Melita; sister-in-law, Florence Cowan of Reston; and very special nieces and nephews and their families. Jim was a friend to many and always had a smile. His coffee buddies at Humpty's were special to him and he also loved visiting at the Mall. Jim really took great pride and enjoyment in his grandchildren and they will miss him so much. Jim and Lorna enjoyed many winter holidays to warmer climates, with friends and family, particularly enjoying Puerto Vallarta. Following Jim's wishes he was cremated. A private Interment took place at the Brandon Cemetery. Bill and Brian Howe were urnbearers. The Ceremony to Celebrate Jim's Life was held at Memories Chapel on Wednesday, November 28, 2001 at 2:00 pm. The Rev. Jim Brown of St. George's Anglican Church officiated. A loving eulogy to "Uncle Jim" was given by his niece Pat Bowslaugh and readings by his grandchildren. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in memory of Jim may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 824 - 18th Street, Brandon, Manitoba R7A 5B7 or to the Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3C 2B7. Arrangements were with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.
