ARMSTRONG: James Robert (Jim) Armstrong of Brandon passed away at the age of 73 years on Friday, January 12, 2007, at the BRHC following a lengthy illness, with family at his side. Jim was born on December 5, 1933 at 131 Park Street, Brandon, the only child of Bill and May Armstrong. Jim's family then moved to the North Hill for a short time before moving to 1044 10th Street, where Jim lived until age 21. Jim was taught at an early age to be independent and self-reliant; proved in part by a paper route, which he claimed, was the longest in Brandon. As a youth he like to play baseball, roller skate at the Wheat City Arena, and played clarinet in the Legion Band. On completion of his schooling, he began a plumbing apprenticeship at Relf's Plumbing & Heating, achieving journeyman status at the age of 21. On January 8, 1955 he and Kay Nicol were married and moved to Winnipeg where he was pipefitting supervisor on several major construction projects. In 1956 they moved to Calgary where he worked on the Glenmore Dam Water Treatment Project. Jim and Kay returned to Brandon in 1959 and operated Armstrong Plumbing & Heating until 1966. Jim then worked for DND at Camp Hughes and Shilo, and then at Simplot Chemicals, Hooker Chemicals and Atom Jet Industries. In 1987 Jim and his family built "Triple A Food Stores" on Braecrest Drive, which they operated until 1994. Jim was very involved in the community. He served a term on City Council for Riverview ward and then ran as the P.C. Candidate for Brandon East in the 1986 and 1988 Provincial Elections. He was appointed by the Provincial Government to the Motor Vehicle Drivers Licence Appeal Board for two terms. Jim was a member of the Wheat City Lodge #168, Royal Canadian Legion #3 and the Brandon & District Shrine Club. He especially enjoyed his years of involvement in the Shrine Circus and the Shrine Pipes & Drums Band where "Alex Cupples" taught him to play the Bagpipes. Jim's dog was not as appreciative and would "howl" to no end every time Jim practiced. Fishing trips with friends and his "Friday Night Poker Club" were high on his priority list. The "Poker Wives" didn't object as the maximum that could be lost in an evening was $2.00. Forty years of summers were spent at the Brandosa Beach cottage on Lake Minnedosa. Jim thoroughly enjoyed spending that time visiting with family and friends as well as seeing how many children he could take water skiing all at the same time. His personal best was six. Jim has also left a legacy for the greater Armstrong Clan. In 1975 he started researching his family tree. All the information he had was the name of a law firm in England which fortunately was able to provide a few names. Trips to England in 1975 and 1977 as well as mastering the computer, internet, and e-mails resulted in 12 generations and over 300 years of family history being thoroughly researched and documented. This information has been shared with Armstrongs around the world. In 2006, a worldwide Armstrong reunion was held in New Zealand, made possible primarily, by his 30 plus years of work. Jim was to be the honoured guest but due to ill health was unable to attend. He did address the attendees by videotape and telephone as well as through his daughter and family, who attended. Jim will be lovingly remembered by his beloved wife of 52 years, Kay. Son, Glenn (Colleen) of Winnipeg; their children Scott (Wendy) of Calgary and Shawna of Winnipeg. Son, Wayne of Brandon; his children, Amy (David) Funk of St. Catharines, Ontario and Ashley of Virgil, Ontario. Daughter, Janice (Harvey) Glick of Singapore; their children, Caitlin of Montreal and Jordan of Singapore. Also surviving are four sisters-in-law and four brothers-in-law and many nieces and nephews. Jim was predeceased by his mother, May (Shaw) in 1957; step-mother Florence (McKenzie) in 1991; father, Bill in 1999 and sister-in-law, Margaret Adie in 2005. The Ceremony to Celebrate Jim's Life was held at Memories Chapel on Friday, January 19, 2007 with Mona Franklin officiating. Piper was Don Roy. Reflections on his life were given by his son, Glenn and brother-in-law, Garry Nicol. A time of fellowship and refreshments followed the Ceremony. A family interment will be held at a later date.

A VERY SPECIAL MAN
If memories stay within the thoughts
And love with in the heart
Then how can it be truly said
That dear ones ever part?
So many will remember him
And things he used to say
And a special closeness
Still Remains?R> To all, he is just away. Memorials
Charity of Choice
