SHOPLAND: Grace Shopland (nee Wakefield) passed away at Fairview Home on December 18, 2007. Ingred Grace Wakefield was born on October 7, 1928 in the family farm home at Forrest, Manitoba. At that time her parents, Walter and Ingred Wakefield, farmed in the RM of Elton. Grace grew up with seven older siblings and helped her mother with her younger brothers. Grace met Jim Shopland and they were married on February 4, 1950. She worked at the Brandon General Hospital in the children's ward and at Reg Pearen Construction, as a cook, until 1956 when son Gary was born. Jim and Grace moved to NE21-9-19W where they raised their three children, Gary, Shirley and Garth. Grace was well known for her cooking and baking skills. Everyone in the local farming community knew about the hot meals she brought to the hay or grain field or wherever her family was working. She never hesitated to provide food for everyone involved with the duties of the day. Grace milked cows for years, selling the cream to a dairy in Brandon. She sold the excess cream to customers who would purchase a jar from her kitchen or she would deliver to their homes on one of her "town days". She raised chickens as well, selling both eggs and "real farm chickens" to people in and around Brandon. Grace was the bookkeeper in the family, recording all transactions involved with the running of a family farm and a busy household. Grace worked hard but she always found time to host family reunions in the summer and make lunch for visitors at the Shopland skating rink in winter. Grace was very skilled with her hands; she knitted and crocheted many sweaters, mittens and doilies. Also, she loved doing ceramics and has left behind many beautiful pieces of her work. She was often called upon to make shower or wedding corsages. But most important to Grace was her family. She provided her husband Jim and their children Gary, Shirley and Garth with her love, support and help for all of her married life, only failing to do so in the last few years of her life due to her illness. Grace is survived by her husband Jim; sister, Gladys Nelson; brothers Don, George, Garth and Blaine; her children; Gary, Shirley, and Garth; as well as a brother-in-law, four sister-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews. Grace was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Ingred; sisters, Dorothy and Ethel; brothers, William, Ralph, Wilfred, and Doug. A private family interment was held at Rosewood Memorial Gardens on the morning of December 22, 2007. The Funeral Ceremony for Grace's life was held at Memories Chapel at 3:30 p.m. and was conducted by Pastor Craig Gibbs. Donations in memory of Grace may be made to a charity of your choice. Expressions of sympathy may be made at www.memorieschapel.com. Arrangements were with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330. Memorials
