Obituary

The death of Hugh McManes, beloved husband of Pat, occurred at his residence, Fairview Home on Sunday, November 10, 2002. Funeral arrangements are pending with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.

Hugh Coulter McManes aged 77 years, passed away peacefully with his family at his side, at Fairview Home in Brandon, Manitoba on Sunday, November 10, 2002. Hugh was born to James and Sara McManes on August 29, 1925 on the farm at Alexander, Manitoba. Hugh received his education at Dalton and Alexander Schools. He continued on to complete a two-year diploma in agriculture at the University of Manitoba. Hugh returned home to the farm at 10-10-22. Hugh married Patricia (Pat) Thompson on June 21, 1952 at Knox United Church in Brandon, Manitoba. Hugh and Pat were blessed with three children: Dianna Rae, Shelly Louise, and Hugh Grant. Hugh and Pat remained on the farm until 2000 when they moved to Brandon. Hugh and his family spent many wonderful times camping, attending horseshows and other community events. Hugh worked his entire life on the family farm on the southwest corner of 10-10-22 in the R.M. of Whitehead. Hugh was an active community member, involved with such organizations as: the Alexander Community Club, Alexander Pool Elevator, Councilor for the R.M. of Whitehead, the Board of Directors for the Brandon General Hospital and was a long time member of the Brandon Men's Curling Club. He was an avid curler and a keen competitor. Hugh's interest's besides horses included camping, reading western novels, playing golf, curling, and "tinkering" in his shop. Hugh was very handy at making things. "Grandpa" always took a keen interest in his grandchildren's activities whether it was a horseshow, 4-H, Christmas concert, baseball, soccer or gymnastics. Hugh and his infectious smile and jolly laugh will be greatly missed by many people who cared for him and enjoyed his visits. Hugh is survived by his wife, Pat; daughter, Shelly (Colin) Hargreaves; son, Grant (Ingrid) McManes; five grandchildren, Brett, Dustin, Lindsay, Megan and Laura. Two brothers, Melvin and Frank, and many nieces and nephews also survive Hugh. Hugh was predeceased by his parents, James and Sara and daughter, Dianna. The Memorial Service will be held on Friday, November 15, 2002 at 3:00 p.m. at Central United Church, 327-8th Street, Brandon. The Rev. John Nesbitt will officiate. A private family interment will take place at Alexander Cemetery. Donations in memory of Hugh may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba Westman Region, 437-9th Street, Brandon, MB R7A 4A9. The family would like to thank the staff of the Adult Day Program and those of the fourth floor at the Fairview Care Home for their kindness. Arrangements are with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.
