BIRCH: The death of Hilma Matilda Birch of Brandon, widow of the late Vernon Russell Birch, occurred in the city on Thursday, June 25, 2009. Funeral arrangements are pending with Memories Chapel and Pre-Planning Centre. 727-0330.


BIRCH: Hilma Matilda (Nyquist) Birch passed away on June 25, 2009 at the age of 94 years. Hilma was born at Hilltop, Manitoba in the Clanwilliam Municipality on December 26, 1914, the second oldest of seven daughters born to Axel and Esther Nyquist. On June 20, 1942, Hilma and Russell Birch were married at the Hilltop Baptist Church Manse by Rev. Meyers. In 1943, Russell went overseas with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. Hilma moved to Brandon where they settled after the war was over and where she lived until her death. She has been a member of the Baptist Church since 1936 and is a long time member of Naomi Rebekah Lodge No. 6. She was predeceased by her husband in 1980, her parents, sisters; Ivy, Eva, Lillie (Hayden) Broomhall, Edna (Herb) Magnell, Anna (Mac) Wark, Sisters-in-law; Grace (Doug) Buchanan, Hazel (Bill) Fyfe, Elsie (Ed) Fryer, Elizabeth (Eddie) Buchanan, brothers-in-law; Mac Wark, Herb Magnell, Russell Fardoe, Sid (Etta) Birch, Bill (Margaret) Birch, Walter Birch, Tom Birch and Allan McNabb. She is survived by her sister, Emma Fardoe. She also leaves: Bev (Mark) Peterson of Brandon and Barry (Jackie) Broomhall of Winnipeg. Also surviving are: Bev and Mark's children; Kraig (Cheryl) Peterson and son Nolan; Kristen (Trevor) Falk and children, Evan and Owen and Barry and Jackie's children; Eric Madigan, Rachel (Jeff) Wiens and their children, Logan, Taveon and Brynn; Patricia Madigan (Steve) and their daughter Vicky. Hilma also leaves: brother-in-law, Doug (Lois) Birch and sisters-in-law; May McNabb, Eva Hutton and Shirley Birch. There are many cousins, nieces and nephews. A time of visitation for family and friends will be held at Memories Chapel on Thursday, July 2, 2009 from 1:00 pm. to 1:45 pm. with the Funeral Ceremony at 2:00 pm. The Rev. Orton Anderson will officiate. Interment will follow in the Brandon Cemetery. Friends who wish may make a donation in memory of Hilma to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 3881 Park Avenue, Brandon, MB R7B 3Y6 or to a charity of choice.
