Obituary

Henry Penner passed away Monday, March 12, 2001 after a courageous battle with cancer. Henry was born January 15, 1924 son of Henry and Anna Penner of Lowe Farm, Manitoba. He was born into a railroad family and continued in that tradition. Over the next 43 years Henry's job took him to many points across Manitoba, finally settling in Brandon in 1969. He worked his way from his beginnings as a section man to the position of track supervisor. After a brief retirement in 1982 Henry pursued his second career in real estate. Following that he moved into investment counselling and only retired from this in March 2000. Henry was a devout and tireless worker for the many associations with which he was affiliated: The Masonic Fraternity, Order Of The Eastern Star, Shrine Club, Liberal Party of Canada, United Church, Red Cross and Canadian Cancer Society, to name a few. He continued his service until his illness forced him to be hospitalized. Somehow between work, family obligation and other obligations, he found time to enjoy many sporting and outdoor activities. He loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing, working on his cabin, gardening, golfing, curling and baseball. Henry was predeceased by his wife, Irene in September 2000 after 54 years of marriage; by an infant son, Melvin; his mother and father; a brother, John, and sister, Helen. He is survived by his son, James (Pat), their daughter, Kim, her children, Justin, Courtney and Ben all of Winnipeg; daughters, Carole (Bruce), their children, Cheryle, Andrew and Julia of Kelowna, B.C.; Daphne (Dale), their children, Matthew and Hillary of Prince George, B.C.; son, Douglas (Pauline) of Victoria, B.C. A brother, Jake (Greta) and sister, Mary Nehaj of Kelowna, B.C. also survive. Henry will be mourned by many other family and friends and will be sadly missed by all of those who knew him. He had a ready wit, a word of advice for all and a willingness to help out in any way he could. The funeral service for Henry will be held at Memories Chapel, 330 - 18th Street North, on Thursday, March 15, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Laird Russell-Yearwood will officiate. A private family interment will follow. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in memory of Henry may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 415 - 1st Street, Brandon, Manitoba R7A 2W8. Arrangements are with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330. Henry was a great father, grandfather and friend. May he rest in peace. Memorials
