Obituary

BURTON: Harold Edward (Ed) Burton of Brandon passed away at the Assiniboine Centre on July 26, 1999 at the age of 68 years. Ed was born on January 4, 1931 in Deloraine, Manitoba. He started school in Deloraine before moving to Brandon in 1940 where he attended Fleming, Alexander and Earl Oxford Schools. Ed joined the army in 1947 at the age of 17 and served for 15 years. From 1950 - 1952 he was a paratrooper stationed in Shilo and Rivers. While in the service, he served time in Korea and was in Germany from 1958 to 1960. In 1950, Ed met Shirley Hodgins of Killarney and they were married on July 21, 1951, celebrating their 48th Anniversary on July 21, 1999. Ed was a devoted family man. His proudest moments were when his children were born in 1953 and 1957. Ed was an avid fan of the Brandon Wheat Kings and was very proud to have driven the Wheat King bus for two seasons. He drove school buses for the Brandon School Division for 11 years and was also owner/operator of E & S Compact Vacuum Repair from 1974 until the time of his passing. Ed belonged to the Manitoba Korean Veterans Association and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #3. He loved to play snooker at the Legion on Saturday afternoons and in the inter-club league, winning many trophies. Ed was predeceased by his father, Ernie Burton in 1973 and his mother Mabel in 1987. He is survived by his loving wife Shirley; son, David and daughter, Sharon both of Brandon; sister, Phyllis Massina (Reg) of Brandon; brothers: Art (Melissa) of Brandon, Bill (Lucille) of Edmonton, and Jim of Edmonton. Also left to mourn are in-laws: Joe and Dorothy Hodgins, Killarney; Winston (Marion) Hodgins, Winnipeg; Sandra (Gabe) Warnez, Killarney and numerous nieces and nephews. The Ceremony to Celebrate Ed's Life will be held at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street North, on Saturday, July 31, 1999 at 2:30 pm. The Rev. Jack Cameron will officiate. Interment will follow in the Veterans section of the Brandon Cemetery. Friends who wish may make a donation in memory of Ed to the Brandon Humane Society, 2200-17th Street East, Brandon, Manitoba. Arrangements are with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.
