MYKLE, Halvdan "Don" Sigurd: A much loved husband, father and grandfather entered into rest on Friday, November 7, 2003. Don Mykle was born in the small fishing village of Syvde, Norway on October 9, 1911, youngest in a family of seven children. His childhood was spent among the mountains and fjords of western Norway. He immigrated to Canada in March, 1930, and worked for the C.P.R. in summers and engaged in commercial ice fishing on Lake Winnipeg in winters. Don married Gudrun Nordal in 1943, and the same year he enlisted in the Canadian army. He served as a member of the R.H.L.I. in France, was wounded in August 1944 and recuperated in hospital in England. He came back to Canada in December 1944 on the hospital ship Lady Nelson. Don resumed his work for the C.P.R., stationed in various places in Manitoba, until he retired as roadmaster in 1970, at which time he and his wife moved to Brandon. After retirement he turned his enthusiasm to gardening, wood refinishing, traveling to Norway, and, later, attention to his grandchildren. During all his life he has shown complete devotion to his God, his church, and Gudrun, his wife of 60 years. He was predeceased by a son Iver in 1955, and by his brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife, a son and daughter-in-law Rodney and Lori, three grandchildren, Jonathan, Chris and Jennifer, all of Brandon, two sisters-in-law Ruth Currie and Kay Nordal, and numerous nieces and nephews both in Canada and in Norway. His life stands as a strong testament of faith, hard work, loyalty and unselfishness, and his memory will be treasured forever. A memorial service will be held at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 114 Ashgrove Blvd. on Monday, November 10, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held at Noronna Lutheran Church, Bulyea, SK at a later date. Flowers are gratefully declined. In memoriam contributions may be made to the Redeemer Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 114 Ashgrove Blvd., Brandon MB R7B 1E1 or the Canadian Red Cross Society, 443-9th Street, Brandon MB R7A 4A9.
