PURDIE: Gwyneth Helen Campbell Purdie (nee Jones) died peacefully on July 1, 2003 after a brief illness at Brandon, Manitoba, her home of 56 years. Gwyneth (?esy?as born in Ottawa, Ont. on September 8, 1920 to Roy and Gwendolyn Jones, but was raised in Toronto. She attended Bishop Strachan School, Hatfield Hall, and nursing training at The Hospital for Sick Children (Toronto), graduating in 1943. She was a nursing sister in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps. Jonesy enlisted in 1944 and discharged as lieutenant in 1945. In 1946 she also nursed in Winnipeg. Jonesy was an active and enthusiastic participant in the Kinette Club, IODE, Hospital Auxiliary, Mardi Club and Altar Guild of St. Matthews. She was involved in many volunteer and charitable works. Jonesy enjoyed sports from childhood summers at Georgian Bay and winters in the Laurentians in the 1930?; she continued her athletic endeavours on water and snow: she sailed, canoed and swam, water-skied, curled, downhill and cross-country skied, and golfed. She was a figure skater and impressed the Griswold crowd on her first visit to Manitoba. She was an avid reader and bridge player, and a poor bid was met with an arched eyebrow. From her intrepid move to the wild west of Manitoba, Jonesy continued her travels with Frank to all the continents, including backpacking around the world at the age of 63. Last on the list of continents, Antarctica, was visited in 1998. She is survived by: her husband of 57 years, Frank; her children: Frank Jr. (Joanne) Purdie of Greeley, Colorado; Jane Purdie (James Spears) of Vancouver; and Bets (Hersh) Talley of Crete, Nebraska. Grandchildren: Amy Purdie, Blair and Gwyneth Talley. Brothers: Arch (Helen) Jones of Montreal; Owen (Ann) Jones of Toronto; Sister: Anne (George) Hume of Toronto; niece Ann Farguson of Brandon, and many nieces and nephews.
