COCHRANE: Maim (1913 - 2007) Mom was born, Grace Madeline Marie Cassils in Deloraine, Manitoba on October 10, 1913. She started school at Dand, Manitoba in 1920, finishing her formal education at Normal School in Brandon. She taught at Whitewater, Stonehill, Westhall and Regent schools during the thirties when teachers were plentiful and wages low. At her first school she earned $350.00 per year and paid $125.00 for room and board for ten months. She was able to save $100.00 that year to go to Winnipeg over the summer to obtain her permanent teaching certificate. While teaching at Westhall she met Art Cochrane and they were married in 1942 just prior to him enlisting in the Air Force. After several moves during the War, they settled in Elgin where they farmed then owned and operated a grocery store. During Dad's career with Manitoba Pool Elevators they moved to Moore Park, Boissevain, Morden, Virden and Brandon. Mom returned to teaching in the early 1960's at Sunnyside School in Boissevain. This kindled her passion for working with children and adults with special needs. Mom was involved with the Anglican Church wherever they resided, teaching Sunday school, helping with youth groups and belonging to the Women's Auxiliary. When they moved to Brandon she began extensive volunteering with the Canadian Cancer Society and Brandon's 125th Birthday celebration. She was also very committed to her political beliefs! After retiring Mom and Dad spent 12 winters in Orange Grove Park at Edinburg Texas. They made many friends and enjoyed all activities associated with park life. Mom lost her vision to Macular Degeneration and as a result became an ardent reader of voice books and listener to CKLQ. She maintained interest in her family and friends, politics, local and world affairs until the last few days. She passed away after a short stay at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Sunday December 9, 2007. Mom is survived by her husband Art Cochrane, daughters Vonda (Gary Cranswick) and Marleen (Kent Church); granddaughters Kelly Cranswick (Russell Burton) and Jodi Cranswick (Bruce Bowie); step-grandchildren Robert Church and Corin Jorgenson; great grandchildren Sophie and Jack Burton and Eric and Cori Jorgenson. She is also survived by her brother Gordon Potter (Marina); special sister-in-law Donalda Neufeld and many Cassils and Cochrane relatives. Private internment has taken place at Elgin Cemetery. If so desired, donations may be made to the CNIB, 354 10th Street, Brandon Manitoba, R7A 4G1. Expressions of sympathy may be made at www.memorieschapel.com. Arrangements were with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330. Memorials
