BERKAN: With great sadness we announce the sudden passing of our beloved father and grandfather
Gordon Berkan. Dad left us to join Mom peacefully with family at his side on June 9, 2000 at the Brandon
Regional Health Centre. He will always be remembered and sadly missed by his children: Glenn (Deb) of
Brandon, Bruce (Carolyn) of Calgary, and Joanne (Glenn) McKenzie of Brandon. His memory will always
be cherished by his grandchildren: Jared, Hayli and Jadrian Berkan, Adam and Dale Berkan, Candace and
Kyle McKenzie. Gordon's grandchildren were the light of his life. He is also survived by many brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews. Gordon was born on October 15, 1917. He later married Mary MacKenzie on September 12, 1948 and spent 48 happy years together until her passing in 1996. Gordon was a World War II veteran and was very proud of the fact that he served his country overseas. He was employed at Simplot Canada Limited as a Supervisor, until his retirement in 1982. He made many good friends here and those friendships continued the rest of his life. After retirement, Gordon took up the game of golf in which he took great joy. Failing eyesight caused him to give up many activities he truly enjoyed, especially driving his car. Never once did he let this change his quality of life. He simply learned the bus routes and carried on his daily routine. This enabled him to keep the independence that he treasured. Gordon was very fortunate to have wonderful neighbors who kept an eye on him and helped him to pass the time. He enjoyed his "chin-wags" with them. Gordon was a devoted member of Brandon Lodge #19 A.F. & A.M. Keystone Chapter # 5, Brandon Preceptory # 74, the Khartum Temple, the Brandon Shrine Club and the Brandon Oriental Band. These organizations were very important to him and he took his role in these activities very seriously. He enjoyed the companionship of his fraternal brothers. Gordon overcame many medical struggles over the years. He faced them with great courage, dignity and the faith that he would always return to his home one more time. The Ceremony to Celebrate Gordon's Life will be held at Memories Chapel, 330 - 18th Street North, on Tuesday, June 13, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow in the Brandon Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in memory of Gordon may be made to a charity of choice. Arrangements are with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.
