Glen Garton Rose, 82, beloved husband of Darlene Rose (nee Cochrane), passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at Brandon Regional Health Centre.
Glen was born, 1941, in Minnedosa, Manitoba. He grew up on his family farm in the Basswood, Manitoba area. He enjoyed farming and telling many stories of his time growing up. As a teenager, he met Darlene Cochrane at the roller-skating rink at Clear Lake, Manitoba. They were married in 1961 on her family farm near Fairfax, Manitoba. Glen was a very hard worker and wore many hats. He started at the grocery store in Newdale, MB then moved to Gladstone MB in 1962 where their daughter, Debbie, was born. From Gladstone he moved to Red Lake Ontario, with a new career as a Butcher with the Hudson Bay Company, this is also where their son, Jamie, was born in 1965. He worked for the Hudson Bay Company for 13 years throughout Northern Ontario. Glen and Darlene moved back to Brandon in 1975 where Glen started with Burns Meat Packing Plant. While working at Burns he also owned and operated Keystone Car wash. In 1984 Glen and Darlene purchased the Busy-B Drive Inn in Boissevain, MB. They would work for 6 months out of the year, 7 days a week. Glen continued to work for Burns until 1989, during those 5 years, he drove back and forth from Boissevain to Brandon. They sold the Busy-B in 1999 but because Glen needed to keep busy, he drove a semi-truck, worked for the Dept. of Highways, and then Maple Leaf which was his last job.
Glen was very independent and wanted to do things himself; his philosophy was if he could do it, why pay someone else to do it. He enjoyed helping his kids and grandkids with home repairs and other projects. If something wasn't running properly his grandkids would always call him and ask for his advice.
Glen and Darlene loved to travel. They spent many years driving their 5th wheel into Mexico. Seeing many places and making many new friends. After traveling throughout Mexico, they put down roots at their favorite spot, Melaque.
The last few years were spent in Cuastecomate. They also enjoyed trips to Hawaii, Cuba, Venezuela and a river cruise in Europe. One very special trip, in 1997, when Glen & Darlene surprised their grandchildren with a trip to Disney World. He spoke fondly and often of this trip. So many great memories were made by everyone! Glen was also very proud of the trip he made, 2017, when he was able to watch one of is grandson's Stephen Grant (Air Force) be an honour guard at the 100th year anniversary at Vimy Ridge France.
Glen loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed playing with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren will always remember him for the active, loving grandpa that he was, always chasing them around the kitchen into the living room and around the backyard, creating laughter throughout the house.
Glen is survived by his wife Darlene of 62 years, daughter Debbie Grant (Dexter) grandson Stephen (Lizann) great-granddaughter Lara Grant, grandson Danny (Kaitlan) and great-grandchildren Emmett and Ryann-Rose Grant.
Son Jamie Rose (Candis), granddaughter Tanna Neshem (Dan) great-grandchildren Brekken and Danika Neshem, granddaughter Rebecca Edwards (Scott) great- grandsons Tyshawn Rose and Bryce Edwards and grandson Travis Rose (Cassie) great-grandchildren Mason and Camryn Rose. He will also be missed by his nieces and nephews. Glen was predeceased by his parents Jim and Lillian Rose, sister Venetta (Bill) Creber and brother Bob (Betty) Rose.
Even though he will be missed terribly by his family, Glen lived his life to the fullest and on his terms.
As per Glen's wishes, there will be a private family memorial at a later date.
