SIMMS: Gladys Jane Simms (nee Bowers) passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at the age of 99, at Hillcrest Place Personal Care Home. Gladys was born October 15, 1909 in Little Bay Island, NL, to Naomi and Benjamin Bowers. She lived in Kings Point, NL, with her parents, three sisters and one brother until the age of 15 when she left home to work in Grand Falls, NL. Gladys married Benjamin Simms on June 14, 1928, and had two sons, Raymond and William. The family moved to Corner Brook, NL in 1936. Gladys spent many hours sewing and knitting socks and mitts for family, friends, and neighbors. She never forgot family members on their birthday or anniversary and they were always impressed with her memory for special dates. When her health began to fail in June 2003, she decided to move to Brandon to live with her grandson, Ray and his family. On September 1, 2004 Gladys made Hillcrest Place her home. A sincere thank you to all the staff who cared for her these past four years and for their support and compassion to our family. Gladys was predeceased by her husband Benjamin, sons Raymond and William, daughter-in-law Betty, her parents, two sisters and one brother. Left to cherish her memory are grandsons, Ray (Mary Lou), Bill (Anne), Ben (Deb), Scott (Jeannie), eleven great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, sister Margaret Bellows, and nieces and nephews. A family graveside service will be held on Friday, November 28, 2008 at Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Brandon, Manitoba. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice or Hillcrest Place Personal Care Home, 930-26th Street, Brandon, Manitoba, R7B 2B8.
