PRICE: George William Price, January 29, 1908 - July 10 2005Surrounded by the love of his wife and family, George Price passed away peacefully at his residence in Fairview Home. Dad was born in the small village of Lower Minety in the county of Wiltshire, England. Although proud of his ancestry, Dad would be more liable to tell you, with a twinkle in his eye, of his days poaching rabbits with his ferrets and nets, on the very estate grounds of which his own father was the gamekeeper. Our father was a wonderful story teller. His faculty for recall of dates and details never failed to amaze his family and friends. His zest for life and his ability to recount his adventures and describe with "colorful detail"
the many characters he met in his long lifetime provided us with hours of entertainment and a loving legend we will treasure forever. Dad's fond memories would include his immigration to Canada. While still in his teens, in search of a better life, George left the security of his home in Minety
and of his large family; father, step-mother, and ten brothers and sisters. He arrived in Halifax by ship, and with only a few coins in his pocket, he began his life in Canada. In his early days in Canada, Dad made his living cutting pulp in northern Ontario and working as a farm-hand near Alexander and Brandon. The highlight of his years on the farm was working with draft horses. Dad broke, trained, and farmed with teams of two, four, and six horses. He loved this time and always maintained an interest in and great respect for the big horses whom became his friends and workmates during his years on the farm. It was during that time that Dad met Anne Isabel Johnson.
They were wed on September 5th, 1934. During the "dirty thirties" Dad laboured hard, along with everyone else, to make some kind of a living while establishing himself in the Brandon area. There were four children born during the next seventeen years, two prior to W.W.II and two following.
During W.W.II Dad joined the forces and served several years overseas. On his return he was employed with Pioneer Fruit/Western Grocers until his retirement in 1973. Dad was a person who loved people. There are many stories from his years "on the road" during which time he made many, many friends. There was hardly a small town in southern Manitoba and southeast Saskatchewan where he was not well-known. Much "business" was conducted while "tipping a few" in the Mallard Room in Boissevain and in the pub of the Minto Hotel. Dad enjoyed many trips both to Winnipeg to the horse races and to Belcourt for a little gambling fun. He loved playing cards (and knew every poker game!), fishing, hunting, polishing-up his cars, and gardening, which he was still enjoying well into his eighties. He continued to help out at the warehouse following retirement and during that time became a "George-of-all-trades" helping his son build his home. Dad was a man with "a whole lotta' heart" and not an ounce of contempt. If he entered a situation among strangers, he made sure he left among friends. His unique out-going nature, sense of humour and fun, and his charisma with young and old alike were evident in his relationships with all. The numerous friends that he accrued and the respect that he garnered from his family are a testament to the way Dad lived his life. Dad is survived by his wife Anne, daughter "Sis" Smith (Brandon)(Robbie and Sheri), sons Tom (Brandon) (Linda) (Josh, Zach and Tessa), and Alf (Shelly) (Becky and Sarah). He was predeceased by his son Ken (1962) and daugher-in-law Ethlie (1984). Their daughter, Georgina, resides in Pennsylvania. There are five great-grandchildren (Hannah, Emma, Samuel, Kristy and Amber) and one great-great granddaughter (Katie). We were happy Dad was able to enjoy the 70th Anniversary celebration with his beloved Annie in September of 2004. He lived his life well and his passing did not allow time to linger. The family found consolation in a statement he made to his grandson just two days before his passing, "It's time to go, Punch."On Sunday, July 10, 2005, he did just that. At Dad's request, there has been no formal funeral. Cremation has taken place. A time of visitation, remembrance, and reflection has been observed by family members. A celebration of his life, with family and friends, will take place at a later date. If friends so desire, a donation in Dad's memory can be made to Fairview Home, The Royal Canadian Legion, or charity of choice. All the thank-yous in the world would not be enough to express our heartfelt thanks to the nursing staff, support staff, and management of the Fourth Floor of Fairview Home. Sincere thanks to Dr. Deong and Dr. Duncan for their on-going
treatment and support. We acknowledge Vern Schneider of Memories Chapel and Pre-Planning Centre for facilitating arrangements. He left the world knowing he was loved. Nothing in life could be more precious gift. He will be forever in our hearts.
