Obituary

LANDIN: George Eric Landin, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, May 1, 2004 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. He was the loving father of Arleen Jardine. George was predeceased by his wife of 49 ??? years, Elsie Evelyn Landin (nee McInnes). George was born on the family farm near Mulvihill, Manitoba on January 13, 1914, the youngest son of the late Erik and Kristina Landin. In his middle teens, he left home to work in Saskatchewan and Manitoba building and repairing grain elevators. Carpentry became his trade, and he was extremely good at it. When he enlisted in the Canadian Army for a short period of time, he was with the Engineer Corp. While in basic training at Fort William he met Elsie and they were married, December 1941. When construction slowed in the Winnipeg area, they moved to Prince Rupert, BC, where he worked in the shipyard, building ships. They returned to Winnipeg, where he worked for different construction companies. During the winter months he worked for his brothers-in-law, Ed and Bill McInnes at their logging sites in the Big Whiteshell area, while Elsie cooked for the crew. George worked the last 15 years, prior to his retirement in 1979, with the Manitoba Civil Service. He had been a long time member of the Carpenters Union and the Royal Canadian Legion. He enjoyed bowling and curling. George was predeceased by: his parents; his brothers, Pete, Oscar, Axel and Albin; sisters, Victoria, Selma, Olga and Anna. He is survived by his daughter, Arleen; son-in-law Tom; grandsons, Darryl (Monika), Scott (Lili), Rodney (Carrie); great grandchildren, Thomas, Kathleen, Gabriel and Dylan. He also leaves many nephews and nieces and their children, all of whom were very special to him. A private graveside ceremony will be held at a later date. Flowers are gratefully declined. Friends who wish make a donation in memory of George to a charity of choice. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to memorieschapel@mts.net. Arrangements are with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.
What is a Father?
A father is a person that is forced to endure childbirth without an anesthetic.
A father is a person that growls when he feels good??
and laughs aloud when scared half to death.
A father never feels worthy of the worship in a child's eyes.
He's never quite the hero his daughter believes him to be.
So he works too hard to try and smooth the rough places in the road
for those of his own who will follow him.
A father is a man that gets very angry when the first school grades
aren't as good as he thinks they should be.
He scolds his daughter, though he knows it's the teacher's fault.
Fathers are who give daughters away to other men,
so they can have grandchildren who are smarter that anybody's.
I don't know where a father goes when he dies.
But I've an idea that after a good rest??wherever it is, he won't just sit on a cloud,
but with the girl he's loved, wait for the child she bore.
He'll be busy there too??repairing the stairs,
oiling the gates, improving the streets, smoothing the way.Memorials
