Obituary

CROWSTON: The death of George G. Crowston occurred peacefully with his family at his side, at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Friday, January 23, 2004. George was born at Killarney, Manitoba on June 26, 1921, son of Harold and Dorothy Crowston. He completed High school in Boissevain, Manitoba and later attended the Winnipeg Business Collage. After graduation, George joined the Armed Forces at the outbreak of the 2nd World War. Serving in the Royal Canadian Corp of Signals, he was stationed in Kingston, Ontario. There he met his future wife L'nor (Lee) Smock while on leave in Rochester, New York. They were married on December 31, 1945 in Rochester. George and Lee moved back to Boissevain at the end of the war. Upon his retirement from the regular forces in 1945, he served with the Militia until 1972 when he officially retired. He started his career as a printer in the newspaper business at the Boissevain Recorder. Moving to Brandon in 1949 to work for Mickey Woods at his print shop, George then joined the Brandon Sun in 1953 as a linotype operator in the composing room, where he worked for 32 years. George did take a sabbatical from the Sun for two and a half years in the early sixties when he was on a Call Out serving with the 26th Field Regiment RCA. He retired from the Brandon Sun in 1985, to spend time with his grand children. George then become a regular in the Men's Health club at the Brandon Family YMCA and a volunteer at the 26th Field Regiment Museum. George was actively involved with the Union movement in Brandon during the 60's and 70's, serving on various positions with the local International Typographical Union and the Brandon Labour Council. He was a lifelong member and strong supporter of the Royal Canadian Legion. Fraternally, George was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Brandon Lodge #19, A.F. & A.M. He served as Master of the Lodge and also a term as their Secretary/Treasurer. He is survived by his wife Lee and children: Dorothy-Lee (Jim) Smith, Hal (Sharon) Crowston, Ellis (Debbie) Crowston. Grandchildren, Andrew, Matthew and Suzy Smith, Ted and Scott Crowston, Kyle and Gage Crowston. George also leaves his brothers, Harry and Jack. The Funeral Ceremony was held at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street North on Tuesday, January 27, 2004 at 2:00 pm. Visitation was held at the Chapel prior to the ceremony. The Rev. Joy Ruddockand Rev. John Dolloff officiated at the ceremony. A private graveside service was held at the Veterans' Section of the Brandon Cemetery on Wednesday morning.
