GEOFFREY WAYNE LLOYD
(GEOFF)
Geoff was born in Brandon, MB on News Years Eve, 1976 to mom, Alexis and dad, Wayne. For many years, along with his older brother Jason we hosted birthday sleepovers for all the friends' kids while everyone else celebrated the New Year. Geoff had a large extended family with many aunts, uncles and cousins including 13 grandparents.
Geoff started school in Brandon attending George Fitton and J.R. Ried schools before the family moved to Winnipeg. He attended Sansome Middle school and graduated from Westwood Collegiate. Following graduation, Geoff headed west to the University of Alberta (Edmonton). After a year of fun and frivolity and GPA that he didn't share for quite some time, he returned to the University of Manitoba and graduated with Honours degrees in both Labour Studies and Economics.
Throughout his youth, he was involved in a number of sports including soccer, baseball and hockey, none of which lasted for more than a season!! Geoff started swimming when he was very young and was something he liked and was good at. His swimming ability and fondness for water led to a passion for the only team sport he truly loved, Water Polo, which he played through Jr. High and High School. He played for different water polo organizations and was able to play for Provincial Teams representing Manitoba inter-provincially. This allowed him to compete with and at times against his brother Jason.
Geoff was very involved through swimming with the YMCA rising to different levels of proficiency which allowed him to work and teach swimming and other programs. He was also very involved in the Y wilderness camping program attending 2 and 3 weeks wilderness camps. This led to being invited on a 6-week canoe adventure through the wilds of Northwestern Ontario where at one point having to back track a couple of days to get medical help for another canoeist.
Following graduation, Geoff was employed by the Province of Manitoba, Department of Labour, as a Labour Standards Officer. After a few years and maybe being a little bored, he started looking for a new adventure. Geoff decided to quit his job and head to Seoul, South Korea to teach English.
Geoff spent about 3 years making many new friends and experiencing new adventures. Geoff returned home and almost immediately was hired by the Government of Alberta, Department of Labour as a Hearing Officer. He rose through the department over a short period of time which culminated in him being the Acting Director. It was during this period that he was diagnosed as having a Bi-Polar disorder which necessitated medical leave. Although there were periods when he returned to work, he was ultimately placed on long term disability. Although he remained an Alberta resident, he spent more and more time at "home" in Brandon. Although he continued to travel between Calgary and Brandon, he decided that "small town life" was not so bad and bought his own condo here.
While in Brandon, Geoff developed a strong and caring bond within a fellowship that provided him with a sense of belonging and purpose. The last 3-4 years have been some of the happiest in his life.
Geoff had a special spot in his heart for his pets: our golden retriever "Abby", our Corgi "Dundee" and his faithful high energy "Master".
Geoff is survived by his father Wayne, his brother Jason (Natasha) and nephews Landon and Julian. He will be joining his mother, Alexis, who passed away in 2019.
Also left to remember him are his many extended family members but especially his Great Aunt Donna.
He will be sadly missed by many he came in contact with.
Memorial service will be on Sunday, October 29, 2023 at 1:30 PM at the Green Spot, 1451 Rosser Avenue East, Brandon, MB
