ASHBY: Frederick Stewart Ashby of Brandon passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. Fred was born on February 12, 1926 at Elphinstone, MB, the only son of Ernest and Burleigh Ashby. He was raised in Crawford Park, MB where he worked with his parents on the farm and in the family store. Fred and Ruby married in 1957, moving to Brandon the following year. Fred worked various jobs in Brandon, mostly in the wholesale business. He retired in 1990 from Western Grocers after nearly 25 years. After retirement, Fred spent many enjoyable hours doing outdoor projects and fine woodworking. Throughout the years, he was a strong supporter of the "mighty" Toronto Maple Leafs. He was also known as a very vocal armchair referee. Fred is survived by: his wife of 46 years, Ruby (nee Page) and daughter Karen. Special memories of him will also be remembered by: Alexis and Ashley Cherniak and Jorry and Kendry Holder, to whom he was "Grandpa Fred". Fred was predeceased by: his parents, Ernie and Burleigh and infant sister Frances. Funeral service will be held at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street North on Saturday January 3, 2004 at 2:30 P.M. Interment will take place at the Crawford Park Cemetery at a later date. Flowers are gratefully declined.
