SHELVEY: Fred E. Shelvey beloved husband of Kathleen (Kay), formerly of Justice, passed away on Thursday, November 4, 1999 at the Assiniboine Centre after a series of strokes at the age of 87 years. Fred grew up in the Forrest area and received his education at Glanton School. He worked for many farmers in the area and was a hard worker all his life. Fred loved to play hockey and hardball with the St. George's teams. Not being able to purchase sufficient land for successful farming he rented his land and started working for the Canadian National Railway at Knox in 1942. In 1947, he moved with his family to Justice but in 1952 the section was closed and for the next few years he worked at Lavine, Harte, Ineglow and then finished his career at Brandon Yards in 1977 after 35 years with the C.N.R. Fred was caretaker at the Justice Curling Club for 18 years and upon his retirement he was given an "In Appreciation" plaque for his years of service. He loved to garden and took great pride in his vegetable and flower garden. After his retirement he took up woodworking, making lawn ornaments and lawn furniture. Fred and Kay travelled extensively to: Hawaii, Europe, Portugal, Spain, Britain, Africa, all of Canada, the United States and Mexico. Fred is survived by his wife Kay of 57 years; two sons and one daughter: Bill and wife Carol of Brandon, Doug and wife Evelyn of The Pas, and Debbie Cross of Brandon. Grandchildren: David (Candi) Shelvey of Douglas, Cheryl (Barry) Lee of Brandon, Evan and Valerie Shelvey of The Pas, Jason, Racheal and Ben Cross of Brandon; also great-grandchildren: Erika and Tawny Shelvey and Kyle and Ashley Lee. Also surviving are: Fred's twin brother Frank (Pearl) Shelvey of Rapid City; brother Albert Shelvey of Brandon; sister Violet Milling of Penticton, BC; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Fred was predeceased by his parents William and Alice Shelvey; five brothers and four sisters; several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nephews and nieces. Fred will be missed by his family and friends. A time of visitation for family and friends was held at Memories Chapel on Sunday, November 7, 1999. The ceremony to celebrate Fred's life was held at the Chapel on Monday, November 8, 1999. Pallbearers were: Herb Burridge, Lloyd Franklin, Ralph Curle, Ralph Berg, Phil Shelvey and Ernest Shelvey.
