Frances Mabel McKague

March 27, 1933 – August 13, 2026

Frances Mabel McKague (née Hopley) was born March 27, 1933, passed away August 13, 2026, at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. Mom had lived in her own home in Brandon since 2014, when she moved there from the farm, Dellalee Holsteins, at Oak River, Manitoba. She and her husband, Russell “Bud”, had shared that farm since 1953. Most of Mom’s formative years were spent on her family’s farm near Elkhorn, MB.

After attending Business College in Brandon, she relocated to Oak River to work at the Bank of Montreal. Here she met her future husband and the life that she was dedicated to until Dad’s health necessitated a relocation to Brandon. As a full time, partner on their grain/dairy farm, she relished the projects and planning that kept the operation humming. Raising 3 children and supporting Oak River community volunteer opportunities meant her slate was full.

Mom’s volunteer resume is extensive. She received recognition for her decades of leadership in 4-H. You could find her helping the judge at the fair baking competition for many, many years. She was proud of the success of the Knights of Columbus PeeWee Hockey Tournament hosted by Oak River for many years. Ask her to help organize the food for any function and she would find the people, assign responsibility and make it happen. Mom was a doer!

Moving to Brandon meant establishing a new community. Her neighbours enriched her life. She was active in W.I., UCW, lawn bowling and continued to garden, only recently downsizing to one plot. But Mom/Grandma/GG was happiest spending time with family and thoroughly enjoyed playing cards and board games.

She is survived by daughter Heather (Dwight More) and their children, Andrew and Kristen (Boyd); son Cliff (Peggi) and their children, Amy (Cam), Christopher (Abigail), and Alleah (Brady): daughter Kathy (Mitch Medlicott) and their children Adam (Jennifer) and Kelsey (Brandon). Her great-grandchildren are Bryson, Colton, Sawyer, Dillon, Eva, Keegan, Chloe, Mya, Christian, Cruz, and Eliana. Also survived by sister Louisa Giesbrecht and sisters-in-law Donna Bate and Denise Corbet and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private family interment will be held at Rosewood Memorial Gardens.

A Celebration of Frances’ Life will take place at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street, Brandon on Tuesday, October 13, 2026 from 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm with a Time of Reflection at 2:15 pm. Please bring a written memory of Frances with you that can be left in a Memory Box.
