FARMER: Frances Annie Farmer (nee Chandler) July 11, 1921 - July 23, 2007. Frances was born July 11, 1921 in Basswood Manitoba to Richard and Annie Chandler. Frances arrived in Hartney in the fall of 1939 from Lauder to take her Grade 12. Once completing Grade 12 and with the help of one of the B.J. Hales' Scholarships, she was able to attend Brandon Normal School (1940-1941). In the later years Frances attended various Normal School Reunions and had fond memories of the ladies she had met along the way. She taught three years at Tremblay School, then one year at Whitewater School. In May 1945, she and her sister Connie joined the Rebekah Lodge to which she was a lifetime member. In July of 1946, she married William J. Farmer, who had returned from overseas in October 1945. Frances and Bill went to Stead, Manitoba where he bought grain and in 1950 they moved to Fairfax. They have three daughters: Sylvia Mills (Husband Larry, Daughter Erin and son-in-law Shadrack), Janie Farmer, Lori Voth (Husband Willie, Son Dan, Daughter Carlea and Fiancee Tom). In 1968, Frances, Bill and Lori moved to Boissevain where Bill continued on with his grain-buying career with UGG. Frances kept herself busy faithfully reading to the elderly at Westview Lodge and spending countless hours measuring fabric and cutting blocks for creating beautiful quilts. She was a member of the Legion Auxiliary, the IODE lodge and the United Church of Canada. She spent overnights at the lake with her girlfriends. She loved all sports and activities from baseball, curling, swimming, to music and dancing. Frances and Bill traveled to lots of dances when their daughter Janie was a member of a live band. They also traveled to Strathclair to enjoy drama productions which their daughter Lori and Willie and their children participated. She spent many hours participating in sports and even better watching her daughter Janie and granddaughters Erin and Carlea playing ball. Grandson Dan also had Grandma in the cheering section during his ball games and hockey games while he was growing up. She loved everything about nature especially bird watching and caring for her plants. In the winter she pampered the indoor plants and once spring hit she was outdoors pruning and watering. Her green thumb was quite evident when one would see her beautiful begonias and violets. She showcased her talents by sewing many dresses and outfits for her girls and grandchildren, as well as lots of knitting and crocheting. She loved to bake and made the best homemade chiffon and angel food cakes. Some of her precious moments were spent each summer caring for her three grandchildren. Erin, the oldest always remembers Grama taking her swimming at the lake or the local pool and driving in any kind of weather to pick her up. She also liked taking Grama any new kind of candy that was out because Grama always liked trying something different. Dan and Carlea looked forward to their time with Grama as they had her undivided attention and knew she would do anything for them as well especially convince Grampa it was time for ice cream. In the later years Frances still really enjoyed visits from her family, a good song or poem and a funny story. She kept herself occupied with her favourite crossword puzzles, cards and word searches until her eyesight began to fail and she was unable to continue. Frances had a unique sense of remembering poetry and lymerics. Just out of blue she would recite something as if she just heard it the day before. She will be missed by everyone close to her but now she is comfortable and at peace. Frances was pre-deceased by her parents Richard and Annie Chandler; sister Connie Fry; brother Alex Chandler; husband Bill Farmer and granddaughter Becky Voth. Leaving to mourn and cherish her memory are her daughters: Sylvia Mills, Janie Farmer and Lori Voth, their spouses and children. She is also survived by two sisters: Thelma (Orland) Potter, Sylvia (Jack) Hamilton; one brother Ed (Helen) Chandler. Sisters-in-law Catherine Maclaren, Rosa Yeomans; brother-in-law George (Margaret) Farmer, as well as many nephews and nieces. The Ceremony to Celebrate Frances' Life was held at Memories Chapel, on Wednesday, July 25, 2007. Rev. Harvey Hurren officiated. Interment was held in the Brandon Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in memory of Frances may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 3 - 824 - 18th Street, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 5B7.
