PHIPPS: Flora "Flo" Phipps passed away at Hillcrest Place Personal Care Home on October 7, 2008, her residence for almost five years. Her recovery from a leg amputation in February of 2005 was outstanding; but her decline was rapid during September 2008. Flora was the third daughter born to Ernest and Emily Busby of Oxfordshire, England prior to their departure for Canada. Born on May 25, 1911, she was exactly one year old, the day they arrived in Winnipeg. Of the seven Busby children growing up in Rapid City, Flo was the one with ongoing health problems, necessitating care and attention from doctors in Brandon and many months in Brandon General Hospital, during her early teen years. As a result, Flora's schooling was somewhat sporadic; but she fondly recalled a teacher, Mrs. F.P. Grove, who went that extra mile to keep her on-track, sending assignments and marking them during vacations, to ensure she passed grade nine. Like so many others, Flo wanted to be a nurse but that dream was never realized. She had lots of experience caring for babies and children, before working at Dr. Seale's on Thirteenth Street. She was a natural at caring for their two little boys and she enjoyed five years at the doctor's home, before marrying Les Phipps on November 9, 1933. It was a case of "the maid marrying the butcher boy". He delivered the groceries. Stories of those lean Depression years abound and this young couple with one small child was challenged at every turn. When second daughter arrived, they had moved ten times all in the city of Brandon. Their home at 1479 Applewood Bay for thirty-nine years was a place of contentment. Anglican Church affiliation was central in Flo's life; Mainly an adherent of St. George's congregation, she sang in the choir for thirty-five years, was a Vestry member, W.A. and Mother's Union member, caterer and Sunday morning greeter. Always a thrifty homemaker, Flo was a good cook, housekeeper and sewed when her daughters were young. Flora's real artistry was in her knitting and later crocheting. She proudly displayed dozens of prize ribbons, won at Brandon Fairs. All of us have many pieces of her work to treasure. Her husband W. Leslie Phipps predeceased her in 1999, shortly after marking their Sixty-fifth Wedding Anniversary. Flo is survived by: two daughters, E. Joyce Maxwell and Edith L. Henchey, Joyce's husband Cecil and two grandsons and four great grandchildren; Lindsay (Marilee) Maxwell, Kris and Brad, Warren (Paula) Maxwell, Tyra and Alysa all of Calgary. The Funeral Service of Christian Burial was held at St. George's Anglican Church on Saturday, October 11, 2008 at 2:00 pm. The Rev. Jim Brown officiated. Pallbearers were: Les Reid, Ed Kaczmar, Cec Maxwell, Lindsay Maxwell, Kris Maxwell and Brad Maxwell. Interment was in the Brandon Cemetery. Following the graveside service a lunch was served by the ladies of St. George's Church. Donations in memory of Flo may be made to the Riverbank Discovery Centre, #1-545 Conservation Drive, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 7L8. Expressions of sympathy may be made at www.memorieschapel.com.
