The death of Felix Andrew "Hap" Commer of Brandon, occurred at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Tuesday, June 12, 2001. Born in Brandon on November 20, 1918, he attended Fleming and Earl Oxford Schools, completing his grade 8 level. "Hap's" early years found him working alongside his Dad in the Coal Business. He worked with his father until July 1940 when he left to join the Royal Canadian Air Force. "Hap" found himself in Toronto at the Manning Depot, which lead to his training in St. Thomas. Aspiring from air gunner to flight engineer, he was kept on as flight engineer and air gunner with the Bomber Command until the end of the war. On January 25, 1945 "Hap" married Julia Kopochinski in Brandon, Manitoba. They had five children, two sons, Richard and Tom and three daughters, Carol, Sandra and Mary-Ann. "Hap" had various careers throughout his lifetime, his chosen profession was painting and decorating which he continued until his retirement in 1982. He was also Shop Steward in Shilo for a number of years. "Hap" enjoyed the pleasures of what life had to offer. This was demonstrated by things "Hap" and Julia enjoyed, travelling, dances they attended, card parties, bowling, curling and fishing. They recently celebrated their 55th Wedding Anniversary. The grandchildren held a special place, and he looked forward to their hugs and visits. "Hap" is survived by his loving wife, Julia, son, Richard (Marg); daughter, Carol (Larry) Grudinski; Sandra; Mary-Ann (Doug) Baron; son Tom (Darlene); eight grandchildren, Stacey Commer; Michelle (Jason) Lloyd; Geoff and Angela Grudinski; Carrie Baron; Jennifer (Tom) Henderson; Belinda Commer (Tom Cullen); and Tony Commer. Also surviving are four great grandchildren, Bree-Ann and Nathan Henderson and Mckenna and Jaycee Lloyd, one brother, Albert and several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his parents, Peter and Analia (nee Dworniak) Komaryzca, sisters, Stella Friesen, Sophie Watson, Mary Stevens and Kay Scanlon. Prayers were said at Memories Chapel on Friday, June 15, 2001 at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church on Saturday, June 16, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. Celebrant was Rev. Fr. Leo Fernandes. Active pallbearers were Larry Grudinski, Doug Baron, David and Dan Mazier, David Sukaroff and Harold Tripp. Interment followed in the Brandon Cemetery. Donations in memory of "Hap" may be made to a charity of choice. Arrangements were with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.
