STUART: After a year of living with the challenges of a severe stroke, Evelyn Dorothy Mary (Charnock) Stuart (nee McCormick) peacefully passed away on Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. Eve was born in Stafford, England, on March 29, 1924. She had two brothers, Doug and Norman, and was considered a "tomboy" by the family. When she was only 17 years old, she enlisted in the British Army as a radar operator in the first mixed gender anti-aircraft unit. She was stationed primarily in Antwerp, Belgium in England's 21st Army Group. After the war, Eve returned home and became an ambulance driver in Stafford for many years. In 1955, she married Robert Charnock and lived for 12 years in Calcutta, India. It was there that their two sons, Nicholas and Neil were born. After returning to England for their sons' education, they decided to move to Canada to start a new life in Brandon, Manitoba. In Brandon, Eve worked as a nurse's aide, an assistant matron at the Maples Home for Children, at the YWCA and as Recreational Director at the Brandon Mental Health Center. It was at BMHC that Eve made many lifelong and cherished friends, especially Liz Gibson and Lisa Warkentin. Eve lost her young son Nicholas in a tragic car accident in 1975 and her husband Robert to cancer in l980. Evelyn married George Stuart in 1984 and instantly became a mother and grandmother to her new family, which she loved with all her heart. Eve was very proud of her new larger family and enjoyed being part of their busy lives. Eve and George had the fortune of good health for many years and spent their time traveling across Canada, USA and Great Britain to be with their family and friends. They enjoyed entertaining and having many fun gatherings with their good friends at Whiterock Place. After her stroke, Eve faced her challenges with patience, dignity and strength. Evelyn will be greatly missed by her husband George; her sons: Neil (Cathy), Jack (Dorothy) and Bruce (Merrilee); grandchildren: Lauren, Hannah, Gerry (Connie), Jason (Dinou), Raegan (Lisa), Jana (Russell), Erin (David), and Jordan (Meghan); great-grandchild, Tianna Paige, and another soon to be born to Jana and Russell. Eve will be missed by her cousins in England, Connie Salt and family, Alan Hartley and family and nephew Bob Wright and family in Brandon. There are many other friends and relatives in England left to cherish her memory. The family would like to thank all of Eve and George's friends and family for their visits to the personal care home and looking after their home. It made a tremendous impact on their day and was greatly appreciated. The family would also like to thank Donna Hamm from Caring Companions for her valued services. A private interment will take place prior to the service. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, April 25, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Central United Church, 327 8th Street. Flowers are gratefully declined. If so desired, donations in memory of Eve may be made to a charity of one's choice. Expressions of sympathy may be made at www.memorieschapel.com. Arrangements are with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.
