Evelyn Phyllis Smale passed away at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Monday, October 30, 2000. Evelyn was born in Portage la Prairie on February 25, 1930, the daughter of William and Ann McLeson. She spent her early years in Portage la Prairie. Evelyn moved to Churchill, Manitoba with her husband Donald in 1950. They later moved to reside in Shilo in 1956 and to Brandon in 1981. During Evelyn's lifetime, she worked at the Hudson Bay Company in Churchill, the Base Exchange in Shilo and at the Shilo Golf and Country Club. Evelyn also worked as a Guide Leader for the Girl Guides of Canada, and volunteered with the Women's Auxilary to the Royal Canadian Legion. Evelyn's interests in early years involved camping and fishing. She and Donald graduated to the cabin at Ditch Lake, known affectionately to family and friends as the "Dew-Drop Inn". This location provided her with the opportunity to practice her culinary skills. Any time was always "Happy Hour" when friends dropped in. The less fortunate benefitted from her crocheting and knitting scarves, toques and mittens for them at Christmas time. Evelyn had a great sense of humor and enjoyed participating in and at times was the victim of, her family's practical jokes. She will be lovingly remembered by; her husband, Donald, her children; Ken (Sharon) Smale, Garry (Penny) Smale, Geraldine (Byron) Bryden, as well as her grandchildren, Kurt, Dwayne, Terry, and Gregory Bryden, Andrea and Kevin Smale, Donald, Darren, and Jennifer Smale. She also leaves her brother, Raymond McLeson, and sisters, Mary (Jack) Bailey, Marg Payne, and Irene (Alex) Ashby. Evelyn was predeceased by one sister, Audrey. As Evelyn's wishes did not involve a funeral ceremony, friends however may remember her by making contact with her family or considering a donation in her memory to the Canadian Cancer Society, 415-1st Street Brandon, R7A 2W8 or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 203-42 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, R7A 2B2 or to the charity of your choice.
