JANZ: The death of Evelyn Anna Janz occurred at her residence, Fairview Home, on Sunday, July 31, 2005. Family members were by her bedside as she slipped peacefully away, having suffered a stroke ten days before. Evelyn was born on April 24, 1921 in Barrie, Ontario, the only daughter of Irish immigrants, Robert and Anna LeGear. When she was only two years old, Evelyn's father was killed in a train accident, leaving her mother to raise five children alone. Evelyn enjoyed playing softball and swimming as a youngster. She came of age during WW II, married a soldier, and moved west to Souris, Manitoba where they had a dairy farm and raised seven children. Evelyn was a full-time wife and mother for twenty-one years before beginning a career as a nurses aid. Starting her professional life in 1963 at Victoria Park Lodge in Souris, Evelyn retired in 1986 from Fairview Personal Care Home, Brandon. For almost a quarter century she was known for her soothing back rubs and compassionate nature. Evelyn's love of music began in her youth. It was the era of the big band sound and she enjoyed teaching her girlfriends how to dance. As a mother, she passed on her passion for singing to her children, sang with the Barbershop Belles for several years, and by her retirement, had acquired a very extensive record collection. After becoming a devout Christian, Evelyn's interest mainly focused on sacred music, teaching herself to play her favourite hymns on the organ. Evelyn was a very private person by nature who preferred a quiet lifestyle once her children had moved away from home. She spent many hours putting puzzles together, listening to music and reading her Bible. Evelyn also loved to travel, completing several cross Canada bus tours as well as visiting Europe on several occasions. Despite having Alzheimer's Disease, Evelyn lived her final years in a state of grace. Her peacefulness, gentleness, warm smile, delightful giggle and almost constant humming endeared her to her caregivers and brought comfort to her family. She will be forever remembered by her children, Jeanne, Judy, Bob, Mike (Christine) all of Brandon, Phil (Marie) of Kenton, David (Colleen) and Paul (Karen) of Winnipeg. Evelyn will be greatly missed by her thirteen grandchildren and their families. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Betty LeGear of Cobble Hill, BC and Eleanor LeGear of Orillia, ON as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Evelyn was predeceased by her father, Robert in 1923; mother, Anna in 1960; brothers, Stan in 1944, George in 2001, Vic and Syd in 2003; sister-in-law, Olive LeGear in 1997; her estranged husband, Edwin in 1989 and daughter-in-law, Margaret in 1994. The Funeral Ceremony was held at Memories Chapel on Saturday, August 13, 2005. Pastor Lorraine Roels officiated. Active and Honorary Pallbearers were Evelyn's thirteen grandchildren, Teresa Janz, Michelle O'Brien-Moran, Stan Janz, Kelly Fern?dez, Ryan Janz, Jason Janz, Lori Jones, Leann Bower, Robin Simpson, Adam Janz, Corinna Teetaert, Steven Janz and Nicholas Janz. Interment followed in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens. The family would like to acknowledge the excellent care their mother received at Fairview over the past seven years.
