It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Evelyn Beever on June 16, 2021, just three weeks shy of her 99th birthday. Evelyn was born July 9, 1922 and was the sixth child of Sidney George and Florence Perrett of Wheatland, MB.
She attended a one room school in Wheatland where she completed Grade 10 and she got most of Grade 11 by correspondence. In her teens, she worked in the summers for six different families, over the years doing house work, cooking for threshers, caring for new mothers and many other jobs. In her later teens, she helped her mother and father in their general store and post office in Wheatland, and also helped her father deliver the mail within a radius of 25 miles, travelling by Model-T in the summer and horse drawn cutter sleigh in the winter.
Evelyn met Fred Beever at various dances, as he played guitar in a band during his late teens. They were married on March 24, 1946 and settled on a half section of land SE of Rivers where they mix farmed for many years.
They raised four children: Linda and Larry were born in 1947; Karen was born in 1951 and Doug came along in 1962. Evelyn was an active partner/operator of the farm. Evelyn also worked as a waitress at Johnny's Restaurant and as a cashier and produce manager at McKenzie's General Store in Rivers where she worked until she retired.
Evelyn was also involved in the Rivers United Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. She was also a member of the Rivers Hospital Guild.
Evelyn lived on the farm until she was 87 years old when she sold the farm and moved into a fourplex in Rivers. She moved from the fourplex in the fall of 2018 when she was 96 years old. Evelyn moved in with her daughter Karen and son-in-law, Chesley Sheppard on their acreage on the outskirts of Shilo, MB, where she lived until her remaining days.
Evelyn was an avid reader and she had a very sharp mind. She embraced new technologies and enjoyed learning new things, a true lifelong learner. In her 90's, she was reading books from her e-reader until her lack of sight stopped her. Evelyn also had a great sense of humor and enjoyed a good joke. Over the years she travelled to see her children and was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Evelyn was a kind person who lived with grace and dignity, helping her neighbours, friends and family with whatever she could give.
Evelyn was predeceased by her mother and father, her brothers; Eric, Charlie, Jack and her sisters; Ethel, Vera, Hilda, Dorothy and Margaret. Her husband Fred, whom she was married to for 48 years passed away on September 18, 1994.
Left to mourn her passing are four children: Larry (Janis) Beever of Vegreville, AB; Linda (Lorin) Yakiwchuk of Richmond, B.C.; Karen (Chesley) Sheppard of Shilo, MB.; Doug (Donna) Beever of Calgary, AB.; 10 Grandchildren and 17 Great Grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Due to Covid-19, a private graveside service will take place at Rivers Cemetery with Rev. Barb Jardine officiating.
Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations may be made to a charity of choice.
