ERNEST ALFRED SAVILLE

SAVILLE: Ernest Alfred (Alf) Saville of Rivers, Manitoba but formerly of Rivers and Thunder Bay passed away peacefully, at the age of 83 years, on Thursday evening, October 13, 2005 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Alf was born in Spy Hill, Saskatchewan, on December 18, 1921. He was predeceased by his parents, an infant sister and one brother, Munroe, as well as his three devoted wives, Florence Ann (Gallinger), Doris (Sandburg) and Frances (Frankie) Greasley. He is sadly missed but lovingly remembered by his two daughters, Mary Ann McCuaig (J.A.Kenneth) of Winnipeg and Geraldine (Deanie) Saville of Innuvik, North West Territories, and his two granddaughters Erin McCuaig (Terence Parker) of Winnipeg and Heather McCuaig (Jason Cowles) of Iqaluit, Nunavut as well as his great grandson Shaye Terin McCuaig-Parker. Also mourning his passing are his stepsons Jim (Ann) Greasley, Chandler, Arizona, USA and Jack Greasley of Rivers, MB; his stepdaughters Janice (Jeff) Worth of Rivers, MB, and Joanne (Shawn) Kennedy of Toronto, ON; and grandchildren Jenny, Jeffrey and Jerred Worth, Meagan and Rebecca Kennedy, Kristie, Kendra, and Kyle Greasley and granddaughter Stephanie; as well as numerous relatives including niece Faye (Ed) Melinchuk of Brandon and their son Trent and daughter Tanis. Alf grew up in a dirt farm environment in rural Saskatchewan and survived the extreme hardships of the 'dirty '30's where he learned to adapt in order to survive. He used these experiences to shape his future life adapting to the many curves life threw at him during his lifetime. He farmed for many years in the Rivers area. During WWII, he volunteered for active service but due to medical problems served his country working for the Department of National Defence in Canada. In 1958, he joined Trans Canada Pipeline and moved his family to Thunder Bay. He and Florence (Flo) raised Mary Ann and Geraldine in Thunder Bay. Following the death of his beloved Flo, he married his second wife Doris. Together they travelled and RV"d extensively until Doris' health declined. On Doris' death, Alf continued to work for the Pipeline until he retired and moved back to Rivers. It was in Rivers that Alf met and married his third wife Frankie. He and Frankie travelled around the globe by sea, land and air. Their travel adventures even included an African safari which saw them cross Africa in an open bus, tenting along the way. Together they earned the reputation of being the oldest couple (both in their '70's) to participate in such a trek. Unfortunately Alf lost Frankie last year on September 16, 2004. Alf was a self-sufficient man, proud of his family and true to his word. His life embodied the Horatio Alger stories where a young man with nothing succeeds through dint of hard work and the ability to adapt to new surroundings. Throughout his life, Alf was very active in the communities where he lived until his health declined. He was a life member of TransCanada Pipelines "Mainliner Club of Canada" and a member of the TransCanada Pipelines Quarter Century Club. He also belonged to the Rivers Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. A celebration of the life for the late Ernest Alfred Saville was held in Winnipeg on Wednesday, October 20, 2005 at The Parish Church of St. Luke in Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Royal Canadian Army Cadet League (Manitoba) c/o 50 Stafford Street, Winnipeg, MB, R3M 2V7 or Rivers Baptist Church, 447 Edward Street, Rivers, MB. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to memorieschapel@mts.net. Arrangements were with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 204-727-0330.
