Eileen "Nan" Hurd (nee Beach) passed away quietly Tuesday, June 5, 2001. She was born July 30th, 1930 at Daly (Rivers), Manitoba; moved to Roseland, the site of today's Sunnyside Golf Course; and finally to Clear View farm in the Little Souris District (Cornwallis) 57 years ago, known today as "Our Corner". Our Corner has always been a big part of Mum's life. She never strayed far from the farm buildings, making her home there with Dad and raising 5 kids. Later, with the help of her partner, Abe, they moved the house and remodelled it. Nana helped to raise her grandchildren. While raising her family, she was a member of the Little Souris United Church and volunteered for the Red Cross, Mission Band and U.C.W. Mum helped out at the Little School House, Christmas Concerts or wherever she was needed. This continued into later life with her help in raising the grandchildren and attending their numerous activities. She worked for a number of years at K-Mart and Pick-A-Pop, then sold Avon and Michelle Lynn Jewellery. She loved baking, canning, cooking, making crafts for her family, flea markets and yard sales. Nan enjoyed sewing and knitting for her family; the cherished proof are the many blankets, pillows and mitts. She loved to take pictures and display them as her many walls can attest. Mum's passion was for the farm and her yard. She spent countless hours tending to her flowers and all the lawn ornaments Abe made and painted. Mum carried on Abe's love of Christmas lights by adding more every year. Year round you could always count on a blink of lights to bid you goodbye. Her cows, real and otherwise, included a collection of Holsteins which Abe and Ron always said weren't real cows. Her home was full of cows, right down to her black and white kitchen. Mum's love of the farm never diminished from milking her mother's dairy cows to delivering eggs and cream in town, to the small herd of mixed Blondes Abe and Mum were able to maintain. Even this spring, while ill health kept her housebound, she remained involved in the calving season. With Ron's daily reports and Shirley's help, she was able to record the births and assist in getting the tags prepared. Her input will be very sadly missed. Our Corner will never be the same, but wherever we end up, Mum's influence will certainly carry on. She was predeceased by her parents, George and Lena Beach; husband, Cecil Hurd; special friend and partner, Abe Bartel; sisters, Thelma (Dave) Allan and Georgina. She is survived by her sister, Verna (Herb) Cox, brother, Jack (Marilyn) Beach, sisters-in-law, Kay Hurd, Kay Manastyr, Katherine Hurd, along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Extended family; Barb, Judy, Bob and Carol, Melissa and Taylor. Her children and their families: Ron, Barrie, Veronica, Samm, Trevin, Tanya (Dan), Tristan, Trey; Jim (Eunice), Cyndi (Adam), Jaime, Meagan; Ed (Jackie), Staci, Kimi, Kati; Shirley, Mike (Jen); Verna (Derrick), Rae-Ann and Blake. The Ceremony to Celebrate Eileen's Life was held on Saturday, June 9, 2001 at 1:30 p.m. at Memories Chapel. A friend of the family officiated. The interment will take place at a later date. All of Mum's friends and relatives in attendance were considered honorary pallbearers.
