Obituary

MAGEE: Edwin David (Ed) Magee passed away at the Assiniboine Centre, on Saturday, May 5th, 2007. Dad was born November 1st 1932 at Barford, Saskatchewan, the youngest of twelve children born to Samuel and Rebecca Magee (originally from Coleraine, Northern Ireland). Dad was raised on the family farm, and his first job was at the creamery in Tisdale. He later worked at a uranium mine in Elliot Lake, Ontario. In the 1950s, Dad spent five years as a paratrooper, stationed at Rivers, Manitoba, where he met and, in 1956, married Laverne. After Rivers, they lived in Kenora and Welland, Ontario, Drayton Valley, Alberta, and then in Brandon and Winnipeg. During this time they raised seven children. Dad was a multi-talented person, who excelled at house painting, upholstery, tailoring and leatherwork, but his life's passion was cooking, and in this area his skills were astounding. His ability to cater for large numbers of people was legendary. As well as cooking for family and friends, he and Mom ran the Husky restaurant in Brandon for a time, and Dad spent many years cooking and running oilfield camps in the High Arctic. He later ran a motel restaurant in Varney, Ontario. He loved to travel, and his trips included fishing for salmon off the Alaskan coast and visiting family in England. He flew many times, and on one occasion was injured when the aircraft he was in crashed near Cranbrook, British Columbia. Dad successfully battled cancer over an eighteen-year period, as well as other health problems. In 2003 he survived a home invasion at Princess Towers, Brandon. Throughout these challenges, he continued cooking and enjoying life to the full. Everyone who knew him was touched by his generosity and feistiness. Dad was predeceased by his parents and eleven siblings, and is lovingly remembered by Laverne, sons D'Arcy (Betty), Dwight (Brenda), Dale (Delores) and Bradley, and daughters Brenda (Lyndon), Barbara (Norman) and Bonnie (Stephen) as well as grandchildren, great-grandchildren and numerous friends from as far away as England. The Ceremony to Celebrate Ed's Life will be held at Memories Chapel, 330 18th Street North on Friday May 11, 2007 at 2:30 P.M. with Rev. John Mohan officiating. Interment will follow at the Brandon cemetery. Friends so wishing may make a donation in memory of Ed to a charity of choice. Expression of sympathy may be made at www.memorieschapel.com. Arrangements are with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.
