ROBERTS: Peacefully, on Tuesday, June 13, 2006 Edmund Perry "Ed" Roberts left this world. Ed was born in Brandon on May 2, 1927. He attended McLaren and Earl Haig Schools. Ed was a true "south-ender", being born in a house on the 800 block of 4th Street and spending most of his life in that area. As a young man Ed was always interested in auto mechanics, tinkering in an empty lot beside the house. As a young man he drove bus for MacArthur's and Manitoba Motor Transit. His career as a mechanic began at Good Roads. Following that he worked for Bell Bottling, Cockshutt, Canadian Motors and during 10 years in Portage with Smith Motors, Roberts Texaco, Wishart's Service and Tecza Ford. Ed was a through and through "Ford" man and one of the highlights of his life was going to Toronto for Ford training in the early 60's. He married Hazel (Wicks) on October 22, 1947. Ed became a member of the Elks in Portage and also curled in the Men's League. Ed spent many hours building the hall addition on the South End Community Center, and was one of the initiators of the Tuesday night bingo. He was President and also on the Board of Directors for South End for many years. They had many enjoyable summers at the cottage at Ditch Lake with family and friends. In later years he liked to drive to Belcourt or take the bus trip to the Casinos in Winnipeg. He also looked forward to games of crib and the occasional ice cream with his good friend Pearl Foster. He often could be found on a bench at the Shoppers' Mall, visiting with whoever would happen to sit beside him. He was very proud of his grandchildren and their accomplishments. Upon retirement he also took up gardening, especially tomatoes, with a passion. No one could grow better tomatoes than Ed! Ed is survived by his children, Lois, husband Doug, children Curtis (Mandy) and Carly (Gary) Wark; Ken, wife Alberta and son Dustin; Jodi, husband Craig and their daughters Kristal, Kayla and Kendra McKinney. There are three surviving sisters; Dorie Chambers of Lethbridge, Jackie Geiler of Brandon and Joy Gibson of Nova Scotia. He is also survived by his mother-in-law Ada Wicks and sisters-in-law, Joyce Stanley and Rene Roberts as well as many nieces and nephews. Ed was predeceased by his wife Hazel; parents, Jack and Louisa Roberts; father-in-law George Wicks; sisters Renee (Wilman), Van (Benoit), Doris (Burns), Gladys (Law), and Lee (Ramsay); brother Len; brothers-in-law Roy Wilman, Bill Burns, Earl Benoit, Cam Law, Bruce Chambers, Ernie Ramsey, Bill Geiler, & Glen Gibson.
