MCPHAIL: Earl Douglas McPhail. Dad died peacefully at his home Lion's Manor at the age of 79, on January 28, 2003. Beloved Dad to Ray, Barry (Holly) and Erliss and dearest Grandpa Earlbird to grandsons, Trent, Cody, Joel, Josh and Jay and very special companion to Helen Bell. Although he left suddenly he knew he was loved and cherished by all of us. Dad grew up on the family farm near Wawanesa. As a young man he enlisted in the Canadian Navy and was proud to have served his country in WW2 aboard the HMSC Springhill. In 1946 following the war he began working with MTS, a career that would span some 38 years and provided him with many great friendships that he maintained over the years until his time of passing. In 1950 Dad married Gwyneth Bell from Russell, a union that would last 51 years, until Mom's death in January 2001. Mom and Dad called Carberry home for about 12 years and had many friends that they shared wonderful trips and special occasions with on a regular basis. In 1962 they moved to Brandon to Cottonwood Crescent where they would spend the next 25 years raising their family and enjoying their many good neighbors and friends. In the summer of 1962 Dad built a cottage at Lake Minnedosa, which became a focal point for family, friends and fun times for well over 30 years. Dad enjoyed curling and was a founding member of the Riverview Curling Club. He played in the Masters League and especially enjoyed following his son Ray and his team with their many curling endeavors over the years. A true fan of all his kids' and grandkids' achievements and accomplishments, he was always interested in keeping up with who was doing what, when and where. He was extremely proud of his five grandsons and held a special place in his heart for each one of them. Another passion of Dads was golf. He spent many happy hours on the links at Carberry, Minnedosa, Shilo, Brandon and Weslaco, Texas (during the years when he and Mom had a winter home in Texas). Due to Mom's failing health many of their retirement plans would never be realized. But Dad would never complain and was a devoted and compassionate caregiver to Mom in her long struggle with MS. A true inspiration to all of us! Dad was a life member of the Brandon Royal Canadian Legion Branch #3 and spent many hours volunteering with Legion activities such as the Honor Guard, Remembrance Day poppy drives and weekly operations. Earl was predeceased by: his wife Gwen, parents Donald and Mabel, siblings Cliff, Don and Olive, and son-in-law Bruce Stobbe. A funeral service celebrating his life was held Friday, January 31, 2003 at Memories Chapel, with private inurnment to take place at a later date. Memorials
