Obituary

Douglas Ronald Staples was born in Lethbridge, Alberta on October 19, 1947, the second son of Chuck and Em Staples. Due to his fathers job as a pilot the family made their home in many different cities. Doug spent the majority of years growing up in Toronto with his older brother Chuck Jr.
These two brothers always were close to each other. They shared many good times like Doug buying a car before being 16 and then letting chuck drive it as he was two years older. Chuck paved the way for Doug, he showed him the things to do and Doug also learned a lot of what NOT to do from watching his older brother.

Doug married Donna Bailey in Toronto on September 22, 1978. At that time he worked for Bell Canada. While living in Bramalea Ontario, their sons Adam, Mark and Brian were born. In late 1979 Doug changed jobs; he was now working for the region of peel as a computer programmer in the Brampton area.
In the summer of 1990 Doug, Donna and the family moved to the White Swan Trailer court in Brandon MB.

After a short stay there they moved to 20 Kelly place where they resided for 27 years. Doug and Donna treasured the life long friendships they made with their neighbours and truly enjoyed all the laughter and fun at the neighbourhood gatherings.

In Brandon, Doug had various types of employment including selling cars, long haul trucking, driving for Hallcon and working for Andrew Agencies.

After retirement Doug and Donna downsized and in May of 2022 moved to a condo in Village Green – a move DOUG NEVER REGRETTED. He became an active board member until his health deteriorated.
Over the years Doug had many interests; sporting interests included playing old timers hockey, slow pitch, and tennis with his buddy Pat. He and Donna belonged to a 5 pin bowling league in Brampton as well.
Doug was also an avid camper, he tented many nights with Donna, Adam, Mark, and Brian including a couple times with the tent pitched in Papa Bailey's farmyard.

Doug was a dedicated volunteer for Adam and Mark's t-ball teams. He was a beaver leader for all three boys when they were enrolled in the scouting movement.
Organizations that Doug was invloved in were; the Icelandic Canadian Club of Western Manitoba and Brandon Circle 8's square dance club. You may have recognized the song as the family walked in "Walking in the sunshine" that was one of the songs that the square dance group danced too. Doug enjoyed getting together with friends to play cards or boards games.

Doug's life long passion from the time he was a teenager was MOTORCYCLES. He made many motorcycle trips, he frequently travelled with his brother Chuck and on occasion was joined by his long time friend Ben. Donna was sometimes a passenger behind Doug. The story goes that on those trips Dougs biggest problem was that Donna had a tendency to fall asleep while sitting behind him. Doug was ALWAYS ready for a ride, be it alone, with a friend or in a group The Canadian Motorcycle Cruisers, some of which are here today.
Doug was a man of few words. He was a loyal friend and always was willing to help others. He was often called upon to help solve computer issues. Doug will be remembered for his kindness and his love for Subway and sweets!

Over the years Doug bravely dealt with many health challenges. He always maintained a positive attitude and frequently stated; "It is what it is"

Doug passed away from heart failure on September 10, 2024 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. Left with fond memories are his wife of 46 years, Donna, Sons Adam Mark and Brian; Marks daughter Bethany partner Caleb; and Paris. His brother Chuck and wife Sen; sister in law Doreen and husband Maurice. Nieces and nephews; Shane, Shelley, Melvin, Bruce, Karla, Reagan and their families, as well as many friends.

Doug is predeceased by his parents Charles (Chuck Sr.) and Em Staples, sister-in-law Sheila Hackett, in-laws Allen and Penny Bailey, and brother-in-law C.A. Bailey.

A Celebration of Doug's life was held on Saturday, September 28, 2024.
