Obituary

The death of Dorothy Margaret Harkness, loving wife of Ernest, dear mother of Darlene Van Mulligan, Ellen Preston, Wendy Barcellona, Bill Badham and Susan Badham-Kilbride, passed away peacefully in Brandon, on Wednesday, August 14, 2002. A time of visitation for family and friends will be held at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street N., on Sunday August 18, 2002, from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. The Funeral Ceremony will be held at Memories Chapel on Monday, August 19, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be in the Brandon Cemetery. Complete obituary information will follow. Donations in memory of Dorothy may be made to the YWCA - Westman Women's Shelter, 148 - 11th Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 4J4. Arrangements are with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.


Dorothy Margaret Harkness (Badham), loving wife of Ernest Harkness of Victoria, BC, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 14, 2002 at the Assiniboine Centre, Brandon. Dorothy was born on September 19, 1923 at Holmfield, Manitoba, daughter of Irene (nee Hilts) and Arthur Haig. She attended School in Alexander, Manitoba. After High School, she took a business course and worked for the civil service in Ottawa, Ontario. After the war, she worked as a waitress, then became a nurse's aide and worked in the Moose Jaw Hospital for several years. She then worked at the Assiniboine Hospital and Brandon General Hospital until her early retirement, caused by a fall at work. Her favorite pastime was shopping. All of her family was sure she invented the saying, " shop 'til you drop". She loved being around her grandchildren, bringing them treats and buying them their little clothes. Wherever she was shopping, Canada or the United States, she would always come home loaded with a pile of children's clothes of all colors. Dorothy is survived by her children and their families: Darlene (John) Van Mulligen of Brandon, grandchildren, Daenna and Chris; Ellen Preston of Moose Jaw, SK, grandchildren, Jody, Danny, Tanya, Kenda; Wendy (Vince) Barcellona of Brandon, grandchildren, Salvatore, Rob, Brian; Bill (Rose) Badham of Brandon; Susan Badham-Kilbride of Brandon, grandchild, Michaela. She is also survived by, nine great grandchildren. Dorothy also leaves her husband, Ernie and his children, Terry Harkness of Calgary; Pat Lavoie of Comox, BC; Jan Paddock of Brandon; Anita Fraser of Cranbrook, BC and their families. She is survived by one brother, Jack Haig of Brandon and brothers-in-law, Neil Holmes and William Lunan and families. She was predeceased by: her parents, Irene and Arthur Haig; her sisters, Alice Holmes and Beth Lunan; as well as by husbands, Gerald Preston and Christopher Badham. A time of visitation for family and friends will be held at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street N., on Sunday August 18, 2002, from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. The Funeral Ceremony will be held at Memories Chapel on Monday, August 19, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be in the Brandon Cemetery.
