Lewis: Doreen Anna (nee Stout) It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Doreen completed life on May 29, 2001 at the Assiniboine Centre after a courageous battle with cancer. Born December 7, 1938 in Edinburgh, Scotland to Norah and James Stout, she grew up on the streets of Caledonian Crescent with her family and friends. After leaving school she trained as a window dresser and telephone operator. She won awards for creativity and the respect of all who knew her because of her ability to accept others as they were. She met John (Jack) Lewis while dancing one evening in Birmingham, England. They were married in February, 1963 and would spend many an evening dancing for the various square and round dance clubs in the Westman Region from 1970 until just a year ago when Doreen became ill. Between dancing, and being a military wife, Doreen travelled extensively and enjoyed not just the places she visited, but the people she met while travelling. After raising a family of four, Doreen began part-time work as a telephone operator with 73I Communications Squadron at CFB Shilo. She was eventually hired on full-time and placed her last call in 1990 when the operation moved to Ottawa. Doreen was then transferred to the mailroom at Headquarters, where she remained until her passing. The mailroom was her home away from home, and many whose day she lighted up will miss her. Doreen was predeceased by her father (1969) and mother (2000). Left to carry on her memory are husband, Jack; sons, Jamie (Katie); Adrian (Holly); and daughters, Elaine (Michael) Turnbull; and Andrea (Gordon) Graham; four grandchildren, Sarah Burton; Baylee Graham; and Kyle and Quinn Turnbull; as well as brothers, Bill (Sylvia) Stout; Jim Stout; and niece Fiona Stout from Scotland. A celebration of Doreen's Life was held at St. Barbara's Chapel in Shilo, on June 4, 2001. Padre Robert Brinn officiated. Lunch provided by the generous Sprucewoods Community, where Doreen resided. Words alone cannot express what Doreen was to everyone or anyone. She meant different things to different people, but what didn't change is that she was the same with everyone. Arrangements are with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330, and donations on behalf of Doreen can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 415 - 1st Street, Brandon, Manitoba R7A 2W8. It was always Doreen's hope to give back to the Society what they had given her.
You filled our lives with meaning,
You helped us find our way,
You taught with open mindedness,
But never let us stray.
You never judged a stranger,
Offered heart and hand to friend,
Taught us to be stronger,
Until the very end.
Words could never thank you,
For all that you have been,
Just know that through each one of us,
Your work will never end. Memorials
